I'm wondering if it is possible to change the scales on a Military? I have camo and would like black. I haven't really taken the time to look at it. I have all the necessary tools I'm just wondering if this is feasible? And where I could get some black scales?

yes its possible, but you would have to make the scales yourself and drill+countersink the screw holes.
You cant buy premade scales unless you have them custom made

All he would have to do Is trade someone for there black ones

Thanks guys, appreciate the responses. I was hoping to have both colors as an option but I could just see if anybody wants a trade. I really don't have the time or tools to make my own, they would have to be premade. I was hoping Spyderco or a supplier had some I could just buy.

No where to buy any. Selling scales would encourage people to take their knife apart. You can contact STR in his subforum, he does custom work.

I had these thoughts once but decided it made a lot more sense to buy more knives.

If you really want additional scales I would suggest you find a deal on another knife with a damaged blade. Scales for the Military are not easy to make because of the nested partial liners. If you find someone to make them, they will be costly compared to a used Military.

I find it very ironic that one of the features listed for the Military in the Spyderco 2010 catalog is "Screw-together construction" yet they don't want people to take the knives apart?! I'm guessing from some threads I've read that people who have no business taking knives apart are doing it. Then when they screw them up they expect Spyderco to fix it. As usual a few individuals ruin it for everybody else.

Yeah, I wanted black but got a GREAT deal on the camo, I could NOT pass it up. Now it's kind of grown on me but I still would like black too. Never know I might be able to find one with a damaged blade.

I think the DigiCam is a hit or miss, because it depends which segment of G-10 you got and the pattern.

Also, for guys who want a custom Handle, you can always buy G-10 Material online and have a machine shop contour it out to your specifications, it isn't as hard as it sounds like:thumbup:

One other possible option, folks have had success dying white FRN to various colors, and other colors of FRN and G-10 black with RIT dyes.
