As i was cooking my meal on the skill, i got to woundering.... does me dicing up the meat on the hot skillet change the temper of my 1095 blade ?

I have know idea. let's talk about. what would it take? maybe poking around in the camp fire?

Is there anythings to avoid doing with a blade as far as changing the temper that people might not think about ?

Thanks for your time.

No and no for sure - no doubt other members will give you a better explanation!

here is a link to Admiral Steel's heat treat information on 1095:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=771970

....since 400 degrees is the lowest temper they have listed, and I would guess ESEE knives are tempered at a higher temp than that, then you should be ok as long as you don't take it to that temp....dicing on a skillet shouldn't be enough to effect it if it is short term....poking around in a camp fire can definetely get it past those temper levels if left in the fire long enough.....good rule to follow is if its too hot to touch, then its too hot for the blade....as I imagine most people's heat tolerance is much lower than what it would take to alter the temper on a blade....that way you know you are safe

i doubt you're going to get it hot enough to ruin the temper, but what kind of skillet is this?

if it's bare stainless, no problem. but if it's teflon coated you may scratch the coating, and if it's cast iron you may scratch the seasoning. if it's hard anodized, again, you may scratch it.

i try not to use metal utensils in my cast iron.

it an old teflon no worries. what about leaving aa blade in direct sun light w/ a black coating? that might get so hot i might not want to touch it....? picky i know and not all that likely just saying

Just no. There is flat out nothing you can do in the course of use that will hurt the temper. Don't bake it in the oven or throw it in the fire.

Its very unlikely that you could accidentally ruin the temper. Its a knife that's meant to be used. Use it and don't worry.

I don't think that sunlight would get it hot enough. The too hot to touch thing is a little overkill in the safety area but it will ensure you never ruin the temper...sort of a better safe than sorry kind of thing. A few things that I've seen done to knives that do effect temper: sharpening on a belt sander until the edge is overheated and turns blue/purple, taking a MAPP torch to the blade to cook of the coatings, sticking the blade in the fire to get it red hot because they thought it looked cool, etc. Most would seem like common sense but some guys don't know anything about heat treated metal and therebye don't realize tha damage that heat can cause.

The tempering at 400 would be for several 1 hr. periods in air, so even if the knife made it past that, it wouldn't do much. Just don't barbecue the knife.

technician1, Just curious but how old are you? Are you by chance texting these posts in on a smart phone? I know I am pickng here but I like to try and figure out what's going on when the posts come in typed with so many mistakes. Mike

300-400 degrees won't do anything to steel. Unless you're leaving it there for hours, nothing is going to happen.

Thanks Mike, for contributing to my thread, and for discussing the topic on hand!

If that was a dig at Mike, shame on you. He was asking a valid question. Also, you do know who Mike is right? Co-owner of ESEE Knives. He'll probably respond back with an answer to you questions.

I am well aware of who Mike is. This is all the more reason of why I find this kind of response disturbing. It goes against what this ESEE forum is all about. I took his response belittling. Did I have some errors, sure. Did his response to my valid question, answer or contribute in any way, no.

Stormstaff, how is asking my age and if I posted from an Iphone a valid question ? To me it sounds like a rude question.....maybe your response is kind of biased judging by your rat pack and your pic... so who is the shame on ? Read the forum rules on insults and side tracking.

I will now ask the Moderators to close or delete this thread, because it is no longer contributing to the forum.

Sorry if i came accross as belittling you but as I stated I was just curious about all the typos in your thread as I still am now that you seem to be able to type clearly with perfect diction:) Threads here often take a left hand turn right in the middle and we dig at each other all the time. You have to have a rather thick skin to navigate here. But again my apologies if I belittled you. BTW, all the other posts here answered your questions and concerns about damaging the temper in your knife but you never asnwered my question.:)
Mike

I type from a full sized computer keyboard and still make a ton of mistakes. :) In fact, I can usually type better from my Blackberry and have written full length articles on it.

With that said, we get emails from smartphones all the time from folks who use all these new-fangled abbreviations and acronyms and don't use spell check so we sometimes have to go back and ask what they were asking. It's just a sign of the times I guess and being the old dinosaurs that we are we just haven't made it into the new century. :D

I know Mike well enough to know he didn't mean any harm with his post, he's just a grumpy old bastard sometimes when it comes to the English language and I'm not even sure why since he murders it on a regular basis :D
