so I finally had a successful attempt with the vinegar patina. used it shortly after it was done so portions of it came off, but I like the look it gives. like worn, old feel to it. Also added a lanyard... not a big deal but it was fun. Just went out and got some Wilson tennis racket grip, and WOW. I am amazed at the feel of this handle with that stuff. I don't think I'll ever take a soldering iron to some grivory as long as that stuffs around. These pics were before I added the grip tape, so ill probably get some pics up of that, too. also a huge thanks to granitestateofmind for the new grivory scaes. I didn't like how my soldering work turned out on my original scales, and he hooked me up with a new set! anyways, enjoy.

I'm looking for the right patina for my knives too. I like the vinegar look. Do you think it's less durable than some of the others, especially a natural one?
The spider is a marbled orb weaver, and it's harmless to humans.

I've never really messed with patinas, and just recently was my first time experimenting with them, so i cant really compare the durability if different ones. Although i have no idea, it seems like a natural one may be more "durable" but ill let someone else chime in on that. Good to know the spiders harmless lol

It turned out great! I've tried several different patinas and they all seem to wear about the same. Maybe mustard patterned patinas last a little longer.
I'd like to see the tennis racket tape. I've been hearing about it for a couple of years but never tried it. I have always wondered about its long term durability and how much thickness it will add.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! ill get some pics up of that soon. I highly recommend you try it. For only 3 bucks, and the fact that you can take it off if you don't like it, I think its a no-brainer. It does add a fair amount of thickness, though; but I like that.

Nice. Very "lived-in" looking.

FYI, you can get the images to show in the post by just wrapping the link w/

A little google fu brings up the possibility that it might be a female Neoscona crucifera, aka Spotted Orbweaver, which is not poisonous.

No guarantee of identification as insufficient data was presented for a positive identification was subitted with this posting. :D

ETA: didn't notice the identification by KFF until I after I checked for a double-tap. Went out to check it and Boy-howdy, am I confused now. Looking up pics of both, the variations and similarities are amazing. Some of the pictures posted for these on the internet appear to be the same for both species.
