i process game with the 4. and though i prefer micarta for grip wet or dry, mud/blood/sweat/etc made g10 a better choice for this knife long-term. plus i figured maybe i could make my two BanTangs look supercool and match.

never done handles before, but my backup plan was sound. (backup plan = "if i screw these up, i will send the whole trainwreck to Ban and he will fix it for me"). turned out to be a really fun project

my lessons:
1) i did a practice run and made a set of throwaway black/green micarta handles to learn. and to get all my screwups out of the way on handles i wasn't going to keep. totally worth it. i screwed up a lot, learned a lot before doing this set.
2) i'm not very good at tube flaring. i think maybe my tubing is thinner-walled than Ban's? got mine at Ace hardware. about 2/3 of the time i get a little crack on the flared part. you can see it in the front tube on one of the closeups. still works fine, and it's recessed so you don't feel anything, still very strong and stable. but i definitely need either more practice or thicker tubing or both. i used the ball bearings and a vice method to flare them (learned it from an old thread here on BF). ban, if you don't mind sharing, how do you flare your tubes? and are they thicker walled than regular hardware store tubing? i don't have a drill press, so if you use that, i'm screwed. but the ball-bearing and vice system worked pretty well.

trying to decide if i want to make one more black 'X' in the middle of the BT4 at that middle oval. might look a little better?

have a good night all. please be gentle with me, i am a delicate flower :). thanks again for unbelievable knives, ban. love your work. use your knife all the time. like everyone else here, i have a lot of knives. and that 4 is the default knife i grab if i'm grabbing a fixed blade and heading out.

Not to shabby for a first time. The tubing I use is a thicker than the one you have. Most knife supply shops sell them. I found a bunch of them at a local metal recycle place. I use a vice and dies that are made specifically for flaring tubing. I believe Tracy from USA Knife Supply also sells some. Cut of screw heads also work pretty well. They are just a bit more cumbersome because they are so small to hold onto.

Looks good. As for flaring tubes, a simple rule for forming metals, 3 material thicknesses is the most you will get in any single operation forming flaring/extruding area.

thanks on both pieces of advice, gentlemen. i'll check at usa knife supply, see what they've got. and i appreciate the info on flaring, carl.
you know, if i keep learning stuff every day, eventually i'm bound to get smart....

Nice work! Takes a lot of guts to modify a BT knife, I'd be scared to screw something up.
