Changes for new Endura & Delica?

There's going to be a new updated Endura and Delica this year isn't there? I think Sal mentioned something about it on a thread a while back.

Are they out yet/soon?

Anybody know what all the changes are?

I remember hearing/reading about that. I can't wait because (a) it will give me something else to buy, and (b) I know Spyderco will do a good job on their next generation Delica.

I was thinking about my own preferences, but I was having trouble reconciling a longer flat grind with the current ideal (IMO) thumb hole position. I guess I would like to see a "shoulder grind" of some sort used to allow full thickness at the hole along with a flat grind that runs to the spine, but I kind of missed that whole discussion so I guess I will just have to wait.

Anyway, I too await news on this.

I seem to remember seeing that the blade steel in the stainless models is being upgraded to VG-10.

Now that is a long overdue improvement. I always liked the look of the stainless Delica (especially with the old handle shape which I prefer), but come on, AUS6? It just seems like a waste to do all of that work grinding steel handles and nice Spyderco blade only to use steel that is a considerable notch below the FRN version.

re: upgrading to VG-10
I have had a straight edge black blade FRN Delica for over a year in VG-10, and is already listed on Spydie's website. Did I get an odd limited run or something?
cheers

I did the same double-take on the VG-10, because I have a 2 year old Delica in VG-10. After re-reading the post, the indication is that they're upgrading the Delicas that have stainless scales to using VG-10 for the blade - not the Delicas that have FRN scales...

Yeah, I've got a VG-10 FRN Delica and I had a VG-10 FRN Endura but my Stainless Endura is AUS-6.

I'm guessing they probably sell a lot more of the FRN models.
They probably have a heap of the stainless ones that they need to sell out of first. (Just guessing.)

I like the Stainless ones much better. I just wish they were checkered.

I only carry the FRN ones when I think I might get it taken away from me like when I go to tourist attractions or concerts and things like that. ;)

That's something I have wanted for a long time. A Delica, or any other steel handle version model, with the handles ground out exactly like the FRN model is molded. Not just textured in some way, but fully shaped like the volcano pattern on the FRN Delica. That would be very cool, even if it is also very expensive (that's a lot of grinding).

I agree also. The SS Delica (or any SS knife) should have a texture of some sort as an option :)

I was thinking checkering like the frontstrap of a high-end 1911.
Like Chris Reeve does on the handles of his one-piece fixed blades.
I think it feels good.
I'd buy one of each of the stainless models if they did that.

Ok stainless scales, now I understand. This is an odd question maybe, but I have only seen one stainless handled Spydie and that was many moons ago. Are the stainless scales any thicker than the FRN? I have always thought a thicker handled Spydie would be neat, though the slim shape is great for carry and most use.
cheers

The stainless model is actually a little thinner, although I think the added weight makes it less suited for the kind of comfort carry I would think people want from a thin knife. The FRN version, as you have no doubt found, is thin enough anyway.

I like the stainless model for it's appearance, feel, and ease of cleaning. The smooth surface is also less brutal when unclipping it from non-denim clothing. A thicker 3D stainless Delica (matching the size of the FRN) would be purely for the cool/collectible factor IMO.

The current stainless model with some texture engraved might be more functional, but I personally don't often like the final result of shallow engraving.
