I recentlly lost my beloved Leatherman Wave tool and ordered another one over the Internet. The new tool came in original box and looks almost exactly like the old one, except for the addition of two small pins.

I took a scan to clarify it:

Does anybody know if this is a normal modification? Has the design of the Wave been changed? I did send a mail to Leatherman, but so far no response.

Kind regards,

What do they look like from the inside?? My wave does NOT have those but is a couple of years old. Could it be a tool lock bar inside now?

Mine hasn't got them.

They look like rivet heads. What do they attach to in the inside?

Cheers,

Rob

I have had my WAVE for about 2 years now. It has been awesome. Mine doesnt have the new pins. The only thing i hate about it is that the PE blade sucks.

Kind of hard to see, but they look like leaf springs to "lock" the jaws to tha handles. Maybe they had complaints that some people couldn't open the jaws with just handle pressure? Just my guess.

Cheers,

Rob.

I think they have changed the design. I bought a wave a couple of years ago, and sent it back after a year of use to have the saw blade replaced (it had becoe blunt. Instead of replacing the blade I recieved a brand new wave, the same as the one in the pic. Those new bits stop the handles wobbling about when the tool is closed, much better than the old one.

Also there is now small markers on the plier jaws to indicate where the hard wire cutters are. All this was done free of charge under warranty.:)

Bushblade, thanks for the reply and explanation! I noticed that the new Wave is indeed a bit more solid: you can hardly move the handles sideways when closed. It also has the wire-cutter marker you mentioned.

It seems to be ok, then.

Thanks all,

Did they beef up the "handle" too?

I squeezed mine hard enough to snap the small arc of metal between the liner lock and the pivot pins.

It's a new design!
From about a year to 6 mouths ago I think.

I'm still waiting to hear if it's better or not.

The pliers "snap" closed and open.
and there is a maker (grooves) on the back
of the Serr. blade (so you can see which one is which)

and little Triangles pointing out the
HARD wird cutter (like the Pulse).

I bali open my 3 year old WAVE and
tho it should be replaced, I'm just not
sure I want to have to use two hands to open it.

So I'm still holding out for a good review

Hmmmm. There are several things that I would like to see improved with the Wave. None of the changes mentioned above are on my list though. Those seem like minor issues to me. The handle flex never bothered me at all. I would rather have them put their time and talent into improving the one-hand opening system, making the large tools in the handle easier to extract, and smoothing the inside of the handles so that they are more comfortable in the closed position.
