Changes to DT Raindrop

I know that this has been mentioned before, but I'm not sure what the scoop is. Has the DT Raindrop pattern moved permanently away for the nice symmetrical/tight pattern of the past towards the more random chaotic pattern you now see? Is CRK buying a different version or has DT changed what they do?

I noticed the change starting in late 2012/early 2013. Personally, not real fond of it. Looks far to "fuzzy" and less crisp than earlier versions. Much more akin to the raindrop pattern produced by Chad Nichols. At first, I attributed it to Devin's brother Rob's involvement in the business (only way I am going to word that, since I have no facts other than what I have read) .... however much of that drama occurred in 2010. I still have some raindrop made in 2012 that looks identical (in terms of crispness and uniformity) as earlier DT raindrop.

Thanks Masterserg. These photos demonstrate exactly what I'm talking about. To me it looks like the pattern welding process has been repeated fewer times. Kinda like they stopped halfway through making the full pattern. They both are cool, but I think the older pattern looks like it took more time or effort to produce,

Is one carbon , and one stainless? The second one made my head hurt looking at it! (in a good way)

I see what you're saying, but I actually like the newer one (top picture) better. It looks more like actual rain drops on water.

The HC ( Carbon ) Devin Thomas Damascus has a different pattern than the SS ( Stainless ) Devin Thomas Damascus. The HC is darker and has a protective coating on it to keep oxidation at bay. The SS is more greyish with no protective coating. Anytime you see the "dark" damascus from DT, its a pretty sure bet its HC. From my understand, DT only makes SS Damascus now and thats all CRK uses in its Sebenzas & Mnandi's. I asked Heather about this some time ago and that was the response I received.......Me personally, I like the SS DT the best...!!!

I am aware of the differences between the carbon and ss Damascus, but I have noticed even the ss Damascus has gone from a more uniform appearance to a looser one.

I really haven't paid that much attention until you mentioned it. there is definitely a difference in the DT Raindrop. I have a Large Sebenza dated March 29,2011 and a small dated Sept. 19,2013
It is evident the pattern has changed. Both are Devin Thomas Stainless Raindrop. It's the best pics I could get from my Ipad.

Yep, the newer seems like less work, I agree.

The bottom one is HC indeed. Great contrast but you have to watch out for rust so it must be kept clean and lubed. I was just trying to show the pattern though, not the difference in steel. As shown on the other pics here, they did stainless in both patterns.

I personally like the HC blades better. I have a large stainless with raindrop and I had(lost it) a small with HC raindrop. The HC was etched much deeper and you could really feel the pattern. The stainless blades are fairly smooth. Also, I would put a nice mirror polished bevel on my HC blade and over time the pattern would develop subtlety on the bevel. I liked that.

Thanks Ajack. Those photos show exactly what I was getting at.

Yeah, I can definitely feel the pattern with my finger and see it on the bevel on HC blades. They are a beauty in any pattern!

I too noticed the change a while back. It caught my eye because I was never real fond of the "old style" raindrop pattern but found myself really liking it after a few popped up with the looser lines. It took me a few minutes googling blades before I figured out why I liked the raindrop after passing it by so many times but it stood out pretty clearly once I looked at a few pics online. I guess I'm in the minority by thinking it looks better now than before.

I think the newer raindrop is a mess.

HaHaHa well that says it all. I am also a fan of the older style, although I really still prefer plain. I have one Damascus knife and I am afraid to cut anything with it.
