How hard is it to do? My good friend wants to replace a rusted out one on his Schrade LB5. I told him to send it to a knifesmith, but he insists he wants to do it himself. To this end how do you replace the spring? Can you just drop it in, or you need to take it apart?

Thanks,
Beth

Everything I've ever heard or read about changing backsprings on knives (especially old ones, when spare parts are hard or impossible to come by) involve some pretty intense re-working (including taking the knife apart). Sometimes, new springs have to be made from scratch & then properly heat-treated & tempered to work correctly. And there's always the problem of matching it up with the blade tang, so it opens/closes/locks up correctly. I'm guessing it'll need an experienced knifesmith to get it done.

There are many experts here who I'm sure will chime in soon on this. Hopefully one or more of them can help you find a way to get it done.

Good luck!

By the way, you might also post your question in the 'Schrade Knives Collectors Forum' here:

You might find somebody there who's had similar issues with this particular knife.

It requires removing the backspring pin and backspring. The spring should then pull out. Replace it, then compress the backspring and replace the pin.

Thanks all. I will relay the info to my friend.
