Hi,

I want to reshape a blade on a slippie.
Change a clip to a Wharnecliff
Or a Spey to a clip

What tool do I need to do this?
I do not want to invest a lot of money

For many years, I have been using a small 4 1/2 disc for sharpening cold chisels, in water every couple of seconds

But would a 4 1/2 disc heat a thin blade too fast?

thanks

It depends on how fast it's turning. Unless it is low speed, there is a good chance that you will overheat the blade. If you use a light touch and dip the blade frequently, it can be done without damage. You just have to be careful. I've made such mods using a regular bench grinder, a belt sander (a regular Black and Decker belt sander like you use for woodworking) and an old Wen Wetwheel grinder that I've had for many years.

What Yablonowitz said.

I've done this many times , I use a belt sander unless... with a small blade like that you could use an old coarse sharpening stone , you will mar the stone but it works.

I have several stones , two of which I save for just such purposes.

Reshaping the tip is the most critical area as far as drawing the temper. By the time you get back to where it's 3/8" wide or more, you can grind more aggressively.

The trick on a slipjoint is going to be the nail nick. Plan your grind carefully around the existing one, or grind it off and make your own, but practice on a piece of scrap steel first.
