I posted this in the Blade Discussion Forum as well, but thought it also belonged here.

I really like bowies and the ones I like are the more svelt ones like those produced by Fisk, Filicietti, Massey, etc. I have never liked the wide bladed, exaggerated clip, Iron mistress or southwestern bowie type. Well boy has that changed!

The other day I finally got the Knives 2003 that I ordered 2 months ago and I was lookin' over the pictures, when I turned to page 78 and looked at the top picture my whole idea of what made for a great bowie was altered forever. What is pictured there is a one of the most fantastic knives I have ever seen, and it is a southwestern bowie. This knife was made by the incomparable Bill Moran. I think Bill is 73 years old and he is making some of the most fantastic knives being done by anyone. This one sure is a beauty.

Have you ever had the impression you had of a knife completely changed by seeing one knife like just happened to me? As you can tell, I am kind of in awe of this mans skill.

By the way, I still love the bowies of the other makers that I have mentioned, plus those of many others, but I now have added a completely different style to my favorites. I think my horizons are expanding.

Bill's work will do that to you! He is still one of the biggies in the biz :-) Everyones horizens can stand to be broadened every now and again. I find the more knives I see and handle the more my tastes and desires change. There are some knives I have no use for style-wise, but I am sure the right knife by the right maker could change that for me.
