Anyone ever decide ahead of time what knife/knives you are going to get when your monies are in hand? I do so on a regular basis, and usually hold to it, but this month was different! I started off thinking I was going to get a Bladetech Magnum MLEK Extreme in the Strider green handles, but itturned out to be unavailable. I then refocused on a Fallkniven PXL in maroon micarta and decided that it was going to be the one, that was until I "lost" my ZT0500! Now I have a ZT0500 arriving tomorrow, and though I've had one for the past couple of years, I'm still anticipating it's arrival. I also was going to go ahead and get the CRK&T Hisshou, but have now placed that on hold until November, or maybe December. In it's place I went ahead and picked up an Ontario Ranger RD-9, as I already have the RD-4, and RD-7.
I am a little curious though. The RD-7 has a tapered blade from the handle area out to the tip. At the handle the thickness is .250", whereas at the tip it is around .125", if memory serves. This affects the chopping ability a bit, at least it does for me, but I am really a novice at this. Guess my question would be to anyone who has an RD-9, and is your blade tapered, or does it retain full thickness?

The tapered RD knives were at the beginning of production and were a mistake. It was addressed by Justin and has supposedly been corrected for a while now. Not sure if some dealers still have the tapered ones, but I doubt there are a lot still floating out there.

I remember reading about the mistake on the blades and am hoping that the RD-9 that comes is not one of them. Thanks though for the response.:)

I cant say this as fact, but I would assume that if you got one of the tapered ones, you could return it for the correct version.

My RD-9 arrived and is full thickness throughout it's length. Has really excellent and matching grinds. Only problem is with the handles as they don't quite match up to the tang. It is a home fixable problem though, and I had planned to do some sanding anyway to knockdown the edges. So far, from first impressions, this looks like a knife that will be able to do what it is built to do.:)
