Well , today i mount new bearings on my new flat platen for my new grinder. So i make several pictures how i do that .When i work on bearings i DON T want to use hammer because it is easy to damage something , especially if the wheels are from aluminum .Bearing should go straight out so it can not damage the bearing bed......impossible to that with hammer. This way i can pull out bearings without damage , say they are good and i need to work on wheels on lathe to refresh surface for example or to make new crown on tracking wheel.Same set up can be used to insert bearings ..............leave hammer for forging steel :)
It is clear from picture what was done , I hope ?

Your flat bar spacer should be applying pressure on the outside race, not the inner.

If you have a lathe, you can make a custom spacer, if you have a decent assortment of sockets, they will often be the right size.
Not necessary , with fitting tolerance done properly little force is applied .With right tolerance just heat wheel on about 50/60 C degree and bearing should go in with hand ...........Any way it is good idea , i will try to make one and see if i can insert it with both bearing on wheel

I have full set from SKF for installation or removal of bearings if it is what you mean...Up to 160mm Out.Dia i think .I run auto service 40 years so far, so lot of tools there

impossible for removing bearing to make bigger flat part , it will not fit . Wheels are 50 mm wide , bearings are 6004 which mean 12mm wide ...so only 25 mm between them , Out dia.of bearing is 42mm .....
