Changing the grind on my commander

I am tired of the chisel grind on my Emerson. I have a lot of trouble getting it sharp enough on my sharpmaker or the leather strop I use. I was going to send it in for sharpening any but the I realized why dont I get someone to put a different grind on it. I realize Emerson probably wont do this so what is an affordable yet good place to send it end to get the grind redone and what kind of grind should I put on it?

you should put 20 degrees per side (40 inclusive) since is not too thin and matches your sharpmaker. That is my advice.
Who could do it? a friend or knife shop?

I would call emerson to see if they're willing to do this.

I find that my method for doing this is to simply tilt the knife. This should work on the sharp maker.

The single edge grind does take getting used to. I actually like it now.

I don't know your friends but I would not trust a knife shop.

Might be a good time to go to http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/794-Maintenance-Tinkering-amp-Embellishment and ask. And learn how to do it yourself.

Of all the Emersons, a Commander is the easiest to change to a true v grind. It is a v on the primary bevel. All you need to convert is the secondary bevel. Sharpen it and sharpen it and sharpen it and it will soon become a true v. Even on a Sharpmaker.

I really don't want to do it myself. I leave for recruit training for the Marine Corps at the end of February and am just tired of messing up the edge on the thing. I was hoping I could send it off before I left and have it waiting for me.

Yall moved this to a more appropriate sub forum and even sent a Pm to the person that could do it for me and then he came and offered to sharpen it for free if I paid for shipping. This community restores my faith in the internet. I can not think yall enough and am amazed by the members here every time I log in. Thank you

That's why we come here. It is not to buy knives. I bought knives before I heard of the internet. This place is like a big neighborhood block party! :)
richard j is the best. He's not just generous, he is an expert and has taught a lot of us how to do better work.

Meanwhile, my thanks and best wishes to you as a Marine!

Well said Esav.
Gpewett, you will not regret contacting Richard. He is quite simply one of the best people around. He is also one heck of a knife sharpener. If I want a knife sharpened right, it goes to Richard every time.
Thank you for your service. My family and I really appreciate it.

+ 1 for the above recommendations for Richard J. And from an old Veteran to a new and upcoming Veteran, God Bless and His protection over you as you go to serve your country. We can all sleep a little better knowing people like you "have our backs covered" while we go about our daily lives. I for one can sleep better at night.

Blessings,

Omar
