I bought a Chaparral Slip joint about a month ago, and I absolutely love it. I don't even carry my UKPK since I got it. I love the size and weight, as well as the look and feel of the real wood handle. There is no half stop to interfere with the super smooth opening and closing. This is a real gem. Here are a couple photos from when I first got it. I hope that they make other handle materials as well. I will buy them all.

This chaparral is so nice, my ukpk's just sit at home now. I didn't think anything could be better than a ukpk. But this chaparral has proven me wrong. It is a joy to carry and use. We order guys just love our slip joints. Especially now these modern ones.

I had one of these but the scales cracked. Same issue I once had with the wooden backlock chap. I ended up giving it away. I’ll buy again if it gets a different scale material. It is a very well-designed slipit aside from the scales.

Sorry you had a scale failure. The light weight version might work for you. They did have CF version at one time I believe. Those won't crack.

Are the Chap wood scales NOT stabilized?
I thought that they were, but I really don't know. They feel like they have a clear finish on them that I figured might be resin from impregnation.

From my own experience and that of several others on various boards, it appears that they are not stabilized. I can’t find direct word from anyone at Spyderco though.

My birds eye lockback immediately warped with just a rinse under the faucet. The wood swelled and made the action bind, not stable at all. I’m a huge fan of the Chaparral and have the Sun & Moon too but my all time favorite is the FRN version. It just has a more elegant look than other FRN imo and with its amazing build, nested liners and all steel workings it feels like a custom made piece after a short break in. This is the folder I most use for EDC. The size is perfect and the extra thin blade stock make it a super slicer. The steel has better edge retention and wear resistance than MagnaCut but less corrosion resistance and not as tough. Overall it really holds its own.
