Chape removal

I am wondering about removing the chape on my khuk's sheath. Good idea? Bad idea? Best way to go about removing it? Thanks.

I've taken a couple off because of the use I had for them and am pleased. I simply heated the chape with a lighter, slipped right off, gave it a wipe.
