The standard method of making charcloth has a fire hazard potential to it. Hot charcloth pulled from the fire can "flare up" and smolder if it gets oxygen.

I tried something different over the weekend while making a batch and am pleased with the results.

When your charcloth is ready to pull from the fire, you can drop the whole metal tin in water, immersing it completely. Soaking it well helps reduce the chances of a "flare up" which can mean that the char continues to smolder after being pulled from the fire.

The charcloth will be wet, but place it on a newspaper overnight and it will dry out and be ready for use the next day.
