I am thinking about upgrading my origional Wave to a Charge Ti but have some concerns about the scissors. One of the main things I want to use these for are cutting first aid supplies such as gause and tape.

One of the reasons I bought the Wave was for the scissors, and was dissapointed that they seem to only be able to cut paper. I can't cut loose threads, first aid supplies, not even poly drop cloth. I currently carry a SAK classic in my first aid kit, but would rather not have to. (The SAK scissors cut all these materials with no problems.)

Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has specific experience with the Charge scissors versus the old Wave scissors for cutting some of these materials, particularly first aid supplies.

I know people seems to generally prefer the old ones becuase they are larger, and a review on Doug Ritter's site said the old ones cut cardboard better. The size and strength really isn't really a concern for me as much as the cutting ability.

Your problem is sharpness of the scissors, not the scissors themselves. Get those blades sharp, and you should be able to cut all those materials.

I have two Charge Ti's and yes I like the Scissors, They will cut the heck out of your first aid supplys. Some people complain about the scissors on the Charge but I don't know what they want to cut, maybe their Car open!

These are Multi tool scissors and here is some of the stuff I have cut with mine, 1. Army web gear 2. Cloth of all types to include shirts and pants 3. Paper and folders 4. Zip ties 5. Nose hairs.

Remember these are Multi tool Scissors not a six inch office scissor but I promise you that they will handle your first aid task.

Why not get a victorinox swisstool , either a RS or X so you have the best of both worlds , a superb multitool with victorinox scissors :D

SwissTool is one SWEEEEEET tool .... but its too big and heavy for EDC .... for me anyway :)

The Charge is about perfect for carrying :D

I use the belt-clip and have also cut off the built-in lanyard hole - so I can use the quick-release on there at the same time :)

The scissors on the Charge have been criticized mostly because the shear blades are quite short. This means you have to keep re-engaging the cut as you move through a piece of material with them. On the up side, they are extremely sharp and I actually like them quite a bit. If I have to cut paper, I simply pull the paper through the blades, without working the blades up and down like a pair of scissors. Anyway, I don't think you'll have any problem cutting most first aid supplies with them -- these are the sharpest NIB multitool scissors I've ever had.

The real downside of the scissors is the crazy way they fit into the handle. You have to totally open them and then fold them in, with the blades exposed. Not the best design but I guess they ran out of space... :)

The scissors on the spirit are great I have cut all kind of material and works fine give it a try it's only $44 on Amazon.com

I have conscidered the Swiss tools, but they are not what I want. The LM has the configuration of tools I am looking for. I also like the one hand opening blades, and the 154 CM, and pocket clip will be improvements over my current Wave.

From the sounds of it the Charge scissors (although smaller) are better at cutting than the old Wave ones.

thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm a ski patroller and I have the Ti and the XTi and the SwissTool and both an old and new Wave.

The new leatherman scissors just plain suck. period. They are too small and you cannot get enough leverage to do a decent job cutting difficult materials. They are about 30% smaller than the old Wave's scissors - which were a bare minimum in my book. great for cuttting paper but the blades are too short and the stroke is too short so it takes forever to cut pretty much anything. This would NOT be fun trying to go down a pant seam to open up clothing over an injured leg - you'd be at it all night.

The Swisstool scissors are much better.

Of the leathermans, the old Wave scissors are better than the new Wave/Charges.

I prefer using the Charge (I get the names of the two messed up) that doesn't have the scissors. I find that if I keep the gut hook sharp it actually does a much better job cutting first aid supplies and materials than the scissors.

The best multitool for rescue work is the Swisstool RS. The serrated blade is really a cross between a gut hook and a serrated blade. You can use it for seam ripping with no danger of catching the patient. The scissors are much better too. The thing would be perfect if they made the knife blades one hand opening.

That is the eternal question ....... why the hell dont Victorinox make a SwissTool with a one hand opening blade ??? !!!!

I got the Charge Ti today. I spent a few minutes in the store comparing it to the Swisstool Spirit.

A few observations:

The first thing I didn't like about the Spirit is the lack or a real knife blade, but the more I thought about it, that could be the one big advantage to it (for me). I travel a lot, and I hate to be without my multitool in palces where the locking one-handed blade might be frowned upon. The Spirit blade, although locking would hardly be conscidered a weapon. With the Spirit, I could carry a small folder of my choice depending on my situation, and the whole package would be about the same weight as the Charge.

Althought the pliars are blunter on the Spirit, they seemed precise enough for me. The model I handled had a lot of play though, which the Charge did not. The hard wire cutters on the Charge appear more substantial as well.

Although it seems silly, the pocket clip is what tipped me to the Charge. I EDC my multitool, and have always found my Wave akward to carry loosly in my pocket, adn prefer not wearing the belt poutch in the city (hick factor).

I tested the Charge scissors at home, and they are better than those on my Wave. They cut all sorts of things that just puch the Wave scissor blades apart. Still though, they are not as good as my SAK ones.

Thanks for the input guys, and who knows, I might end up with a Spirit as well one of these days.
