Hi all, this is my first post here, I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with the locks on their charge ti ? The ones on my saw and file don't hold the way they should,I have the same locking system on my old wave and have not had any problems.I did a search on here but couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Harry,

On the very first time I used my Charge, the plain edge blade folded while cutting out a vine (no injury). At first I thought it possible my work gloves activated the lock release, but a week or so later, when I was doing some not difficult cutting, it folded again. This time, I wasn't wearing gloves (no injury). A spine tap on the sole of my shoe folded the blade, and so long as I was testing, the serrated failed, too. In many years using any number of locking blades, including by Leatherman, these were the only failures I ever experienced.

After a brief e-mail conversation with Leatherman Warranty Dept., I sent them the Charge. It came back with a note that nothing had to be done, the blades were "in spec."

I don't really know what caused the lock to fail. It could have been mishandling, an overlooked flaw on my sample, a weakness in design or manufacture, but whatever, I didn't want to risk my fingers on a question mark. So I sold off the Charge with a relatively clear conscience, since it had, after all, been officially inspected and certified by Leatherman.

On two separate occasions I made mention of this matter while posting on other topics, but since nobody picked up on it, I figured this was not of widespread concern.

I wonder how widespread this problem is ? Like i had mentioned these locks seem to be the same as the ones on my old style wave, and they have never failed me. The thing that i noticed is when the locks on the old wave locked in place there was a loud click. on the charge there is a very soft click, no where near as aggresive, and the lock doesn't seem to go all the way over as it does on the wave.I wonder if there was a defective lot sent out?

I got my first Leatheman yesterday (Charge AL) and I was disappointed to see that the liner lock moved all the way to the scale. It appeared that the blade tang was ramped and I expected the lock to move just flush with the lock side of the blade tang. I started a thread on Multitool.org about this...you may want to visit over there.

Got to say I'm a little disappointed in the Leatherman...I hope it holds up well...just don't know yet.

It does seem that my Vic Swisstool Spirit is a better tool.

Oh well, live and learn I guess.

:)

harry, znapschatz, can you guys elaborate on what happened when the lock failed? I mean, did the liner lock tab disengage "inboard", allowing the knife blade to fold up on you? Or did it somehow move too far "outboard", like what plowboy is thinking might happen on his Charge someday?

~Bob

Yes thats just what happened the lock moved inboard causing the file and the saw to close on me. It's almost like the locks aren't fully engaging if that makes any sence.

I haven't had a lock failure yet but i have had the lock jammed many times

The tab may have moved outboard (toward the scale?), or seemed to when I spine tested, sometimes not. I don't know enough about the mechanism to make sense of the failure.
