charge ti question

Well i got one a couple weeks ago, very nice tool. It seems very sturdy compared with my last leatherman and has everything i need, but not too much that it clutters the tool.

One thing came to my attention that bugged me a bit. The pliers when fully closed don't completely contact near the nose of the pliers. You can slide a peice of paper in between them half a centimeter or so before the teeth start to actually touch each other. To clarify, you can't grab a peice of paper with the last half centimeter of the pliers becuase the gap is too big. Want to know if this is somethign i should be exchanging or if all charge ti's are like this.

Thanks

Thats a good question !

Might be worth emailing Leatherman directly to see what they say.... if it's the same on all the Charge's then they have obviously let their quality slip with this new range :(

Apart from that, how is the Ti in other respects and how does it compare to any other multi-tools you have ?

Previous to this i used the leatherman pst. They are roughtly the same size but the charge is slightly heavier and a little thicker. The Knife is noticably sharper and more durable as with the diamond coated file. The rounded handles give you alot more squeezing pressure for the pliers. The optional clip is very handy becuase you can add and remove it with need. When i work i always wear a belt so i can keep the nice nylon sheath either up and down or sideways on my belt (the sheath has two different style loops). I just came back from a week of camping and i used the pocket clip all the time just becuase i wore shorts most of the time and forgot to bring a belt with me. Overall craftsman ship is very nice and it looks like this tool will last a very long time.

I read that some people were disappointed with the sharpness of the Charge's knife blade. I guess that's not the case with every Charge. I will get mine in about two weeks time. I'm very curious to see how I will like it. Most of the things I heard about the Charge are very positive though.

i touched mine up a bit, but i remember the way it came, it could cut some of the hair off my arm. For what i need it for, that is sharp enough for me. I think the serraded knife though comes noticably sharper.

guys,i had a q........how does the titanium handle rock?becos i am afraid it is easy to stain like the aluminium.......

Please....someone must have another charge ti to compare with?

ckl what do you mean by how does it rock? There is no movement to the handle at all if that is what you mean. And i don't think anything on a leatherman has ever been made out of aluminium, its all stainless steel or similar alloys. I'm not sure what you mean by staining but i don't think anything would really stain it, its alot harder than aluminum as is stainless steel.

I just got my Charge Ti yesterday and the pliers and handles seem as solid as a rock. My pliers do not suffer from any gap at all. Also, the handles don't rock as some people have indicated.

I also like the size compared to the Supertool. I have a supertool for the really heavy work, but the Charge is great, small enough to carry around like a pocket knive. The 154 CM blade is extremely sharp.

Overall, a great tool. The only concern I have is the number of new springs inside the handle that keep the blades from opening when the pliers are in use. There is a small cam on the end of each arm that opens and closes the springs. I guess with a 25 year warranty, it shouldn't matter. I am just a fan of simple and hope the springs last those 25 years.

LakeTahoe, just to clarify:
You can't even slip paper into the last 0.5 cm of the nose of the pliers they are that tight? Mine are very solid as well, but i just thought it odd that there was that tiny gap at the nose of the pliers.

With the last 0.5 cms of my blade i can't grab paper is basically what it comes down to. If yours can i think i'll have to get an exchange.

Hi guys, I have another question on the charge TI. I've got the charge TI, and when in closed position (the pliers into the handles), my charge seems very loose and easy to open up. My wave is closed much tighter than my charge. Is this normal? It's just that when using the side clip, it could cause the charge to open up while running or wathever.

LakeTahoe, thank you for the clarification!

Afterglow, my charge ti seems pretty much comparable as to how you describe the pivot on yours. If i was goign to go for a run with the clip, becuase the position of the tool makes it prone to falling open, i would definetly either use a pocket to clip it to the inside of, the sheath, or a small elastic to ensure it stays shut. I usually clip stuff to the inside of my pocket or pants and can't see it coming open that way.

Hope that helps

Afterglow, in response to your question about the ease with which the Charge opens up. My take on it is this is by design. I remember reading a lot about the Gerber vs. Leatherman debate and talking to people. One thing that was consistent is the Gerber (some models) could be used one handed, whereas the Leatherman needed two hands. With some careful twisting, I can open my Charge one handed and use the pliers. That's in addition to one handed opening of the two knives.

thank you guys for responding to my question, and thank you chargeguy for your suggestion of clipping it inside, really simple but I just didn't think of it (:

I have had my Leatherman Charge Ti for about a month now and after reading about the post that said the last half centi-meter of the pliers not being able to pick up a piece of paper, it prompted me to try it out and I to have noticed that there is a gap and I can slide a piece of paper about half a centi-meter down the pliers while they are closed.
