Charge TTi issue

Just purchased a charge tti online and received it yesterday. Upon opening it, I was surprised how unsmooth it was. I also own a skeletool and was very pleased with how smooth the blade deployed. I was expecting smoother deployment on the TTi but what I got was very gritty. The pliers were also very sticky and gritty. I noticed the date was 0513 (May 2013 prediction?). I did oil everything up, as I take very good care of my knifes and guns. This helped out tremendously with the pliers and pleased with them. But the knife is still an issue. The alignment in the blade "housing" is not good either. The blade rubs against a wall at rest, but shouldn't affect deployment due to pressing on it to "flick" it open.

Any ideas? Is this normal and I'm just being OCD?

Seen several threads around the web discussing the recent poor QC at Leatherman.

I agree, think the mix is 25% negative 75% positive. Was hoping for the later.

Very pleased with everything else. Size, tools, materials, design, ect. Just the grit on deployment and alignment.

In my case, from 1996 to the present, about a dozen new Leathermen have been in and out of my hands, every one of them good to go out right of the box. I'm getting the notion there is a possibility that in some instances, on line vendors are sending out returned merchandise. It is probably unintentional; the packers pick up a box to prep for shipment and it happens to be one that had come back because of a defect or abuse. Or, Leatherman has a QC issue and maybe I'm the lucky one.

I recently purhased a brand new TTI from a store here in South Africa. I have exactly the same issue with both the knife blades. I tried a bit of oil, but does not help. I do not want to return it to Leatherman RSA, as they replace units with refurb units. These sometimes have scratches and marks on them. I can see that there is only one copper washer between the frame and the blade, and not one on the handle side. Would it improve it by adding one on that side?

I also have a Charge Al and Alx, and do not have this issue, blades open smooth, but i see there are washers on both sides of the main blade.

Greetings from South Africa.

Can't you exchange the TTi at the store where you purchased it? Most stores around here will accept an exchange out of their stock for a defective product and get credit for the return from the distributer.

Hi Hugos. I recently had an old LM Wave replaced (here in RSA) and it looks like a brand new unit. My dad, brother and father-in-law also had theirs replaced and it looks like it comes straight out of the factory. If they are refurbished units then they did a good job on it.
