Today in our only pawn shop on the island I saw a gorgeous sub-hilt fighter with ebony scales, bolt pins and a 6" ATS34 mirror finish for only $225. It was made by a maker named Charles Bolton of Jonesburg, MO. The knife was just incredible. I left the store thinking that even a Cold Steel sub hilt is more than that so I turned the car around and bought the knife for $200 after the obligatory haggling with the owner.
When I got home I looked up Mr. Bolton in Knives2001, found his number and called him. What a wonderful gentleman. Mr. Bolton is 76 years old and has been making knives for 30 years. He no longer takes orders due to health reasons but has a few knives available from time to time and sells from his stock. He told me a similar knife would be around $350 if he had one. His heat treat is from Paul Bos and Mr. Bolton does his own leatherwork.
Has anyone else ever heard of this maker? We had a very nice talk and it felt like I have known him for years after just one conversation. The knife community is a warm community that is for sure.
I would love to hear from others who have heard or know Mr. Bolton.
Thanks,
