I made a batch of charred cloth not too long ago. I hadn't made any in quite along time and didn't remember it taking so long. I had to wait about 15 minutes before it was ready... But after that it caught a spark very easy. I will certainly use the old flint and steel technique more often now. It has a nostalgic feel to it and is more satisfying than using a ferro rod... What do you guys prefer: flint+ steel or ferro rod ?

Here is the vid for those interested.

I have to admit this stuff catches a spark better than I remember.
I will always carry some from now on

I always have some char with me but also, I carry a bandanna and have a tee shirt rag if I use what I've got and make more.

coincidentally...I've also charred natural materials before....saddle fungus is great to char and once I did some fugly mushroom I saw growing out of a stump. Kinda looked like a brain...

I carry a ferro rod simply because I've never tried flint and steel.
I would like to add that skill set to my kit though.

Flint and steel isn't all that hard to accomplish but it does take some doing to finesse a fire sometimes. Dampness and [better than a slight] wind [as is in any fire making scenario] are your worst enemies. Making the ember is easy....transferring it is sometimes the issue.

it's a worthy undertaking though, I recommend it.
