Charring without a tin

Cool Video.. Looks similar to howhow my use to make charcoal, when I was a kid..

Thanks for sharing

It looks like something I might be able to do with the big can of wood ash I have .... Wheels are a turnin'...;)

Thanks , guys.
Tux,
Be sure and post your results if you don't mind, I'd be interested.

Hey I finally got a chance to try it... Sorry it took so long, but someone threw out my 3 big cans of sifted wood ash I had saved up:mad:..

I got to try this in a can as well as on an open fire with what ash I had left from my bbq'ing this year. I only used little chunks about finger length(or shorter) for this.. It seemed to work pretty good with the ash.. I just had to make a hole about handlenusength deep, and use a soupcan as the container...

Once I had the punkwood pretty well charred I'd put it in the can and dump ash in on it and cover the can completely...

Seemed to work pretty dang good.. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Bindlestitch:thumbup:;)

That's pretty cool. Is that your ugly mug in the vid?:D

So you bury it to stop it from 'cooking' all the way through?

Yep, you snuff out all the fire, and embers.. Works like a charm... I tried with 2 different sparkers, but not sure if it'd work with flint and steel.. Maybe have to try that later...

Unfortunately that's my ugly mug.
Burying it is just to make sure it's out. Burying it by the fire is just insurance against wet ground.

P.S. Thanks to everyone else for watching.
