Went back and redid a knife I previously sharpened. Chasing a more perfect mirror and took the edge all the way up to 640,000 grit. Somewhere around 10 degrees per side.

Tryiing to capture the depth of field visible in the bevel.

You and MadRookie need to hang out, nice bevel.

Funny story , we have quite a few mutual friends , but we just haven't run into each other yet. Im sure one day ill meet him on Skype , just hasn't happened yet.

Thanks for the compliments. One of my shaptons appears to be contaminated somehow. Im chasing out scratches that are appearing after the 1500 , when I know for a fact that everything lower has been removed. I think I've narrowed it down to the 2k , 5k or possibly 8k stone. I need to take a few hours one day and see precisely whats going on under the microscope.

Keep in mind that swarf (steel matrix & carbide) capable of produce unwanted over-size scratches. Strop on clean surface between grit may help minimize contamination.

Thank you. Stones were all lapped twice during sharpening. Knife was cleaned in between stones. And wiped off with clean shop towel , then a clean tissue , before changing grits. Once I got to the strops , I just use tissue.

These are random DEEP scratches under the scope , and appear to be triangular in nature , leading me to believe there is a piece of metal or something embedded in either the 2k or the 5k stone. Hard to say because my stones get lapped so often that it would never protrude from the surface enough for me to notice it. This has been an issue I have been chasing down since I got the stones. Now I have nailed it down to 2 stones.

When my Nubatama stones get here next month it will be easy to track down. I could also nail it down by using my diamond films. Use the films up to 2k and then jump to the 5k shapton , if the scratches show up I know its the 5k shapton , if not I know its the 2k. Personally my money is on the 2k shapton. I just need time and motivation to track it down.

Steel type? It might be not a coincidental for these deep scratches occurred around 2K-8K especially involving waterstone. i.e. I suspect carbides and or fractional grains pulled/popped out. Oh well, fun to guess, until you get ur new toys :p

Just simple Aus8a , not really anything loaded with carbides. Part of the reason for sharpening this knife is to rule out carbides. If I'm dealing with a high carbide steel I either just dope my stones with CBN , or go to diamond films.

Merry Xmas

I typically go for a more practical finish but every once and a while I like to have a little fun...
