Chaves or Liong Mah?

Both of these knives are made by Reate. I'm wondering are they the same quality or does the design of either elevate that brand. Are there other, better, Reate knives? I've never handled any. Just looking for an experienced opinion.

I've only handled the Chaves between these two, and they are top notch. They're somewhat chunky but just amazingly well made with fantastic fit and finish, materials, action, etc. Really it comes down to which designs appeal to you more. Something to consider (or dismiss, totally up to you)...not too long ago there was a bit of a hubbub with a fairly popular you-tuber who had pointed out some issues with a recent Liong Man knife (I forget the model) with an overly weak detent among other issues, and the response from Mah was pretty childish and inappropriate and left a lot to be desired in my humble opinion. So I personally might think twice before sending my money to him.

Reate also makes some Begg designs which have been stellar in my experience. Their own designs are also great.

I have a couple Reate made Chaves Redencions and they are both outstanding. I should probably sell one instead of keeping it as a safe (drawer) queen. Beautiful knives.

Chaves over Mah all day! I can’t afford his customs but I love everything he makes, and Reate is one of the best Chinese OEMs

They’ve actually acknowledged that the clip turns off some, and a handful of models I believe come with multiple clips to give you the option to ditch the skull :)

I saw that recently. Did they do a collaboration with another manufacturer that has a different clip?

Ramon designed a “plain” Ti clip which is included with all new Chaves folders. Manufactured by Reate, as are all the Ultramar (commercial) line of folders.

That opens up a new world of possibilities. :)

Is there a list of models that come with a plain Ti clip or is it all of them now?

It seems to be all production models. You can tell because the screws are visible on the skull clip.

Note the picture in the post above of four Chaves knives. Two of the four have the “new” clip design which allows for the included plain Ti clip to be installed. (Visible screws as stated in Synov’s post.) Chaves began including the plain clips in late 2021/early 2022 if I recall correctly.
