I started to make knife by hand file and been loking for 2x72" belt grinder for a while but they are too expensive for me. I did some search and found this simple design.
I spent around $200aus for the build.
- The 3hp motor I got free from the water pump. (it is the air cooled motor but still a bit hot when running without water).

- The frame was made by 40mmx40mm, 50mmx50mm tubing - the base and front idle wheels mount was made by 100mmx10mm flat bar. I had to pay around $120 aus for steel ( they sell the steel in 8meters long so I ended up with alot of extra for my next build).

- I spent $36 for set of 4 longboard wheels using as Idle wheel and tracking wheel. Drive wheel was make by MDF ( for the simpleness of the build I don't use pulley for changing speed, I change speed by changing the size of drive wheel and I think I will build my own VFD later).
- Also have to spent $20 Aus for nuts, bolts ( bloody expensive here)

The tool I used for the build also very simple - Anger grinder, drill, Stick welding. Hope it will help newbie like me start making knife
I learn the design and the build from alaskabearhawk - in the video he explain very detail about dimension and his build:

Very nice...
I noticed on the video his platen looks fixed and he didn't mention about if it wore out.
Is your movable/ can use glass with it?

Looks like I got a reason to start collecting steel.

I think glass is not a good ideal because it is hard to cut in size and mount . I would use harden steel or stainless steel for the plate if I have a chance.

Pyro-ceramic glass is the stuff to use apparently. It's the kind used in the windows on fire place inserts. It remains flat for longer than hardened steel will. You can get it at fireplace supply stores.

There are several threads here about "glass platens" if you want to do a little research.

Thank you for the info. I did some search. will get one pre-cut and mount it on with some supper glue - Much easier than I thought.

Rather than super glue, use JB Weld. It will hold up to the heat better than super glue. There are several threads here on how to install a glass platten.
