I need to get one for my BOB, I have been looking a little...they seem really overpriced for a small net. Any Ideas guys...I am thinking about one with a net...I hate buzzing in my ears at night....I usually rap this old OD green towel around my head, but at the hottest times of the year, this can be uncomfortable. The smaller and lighter the better of course. Gene

It's funny that I came across this thread today. I saw a thread yesturday about how to avoid bugs, especially ticks, and last night while I was sleeping, I came up with the idea of packing a hammock! So, I guess it wasn't such a crazy idea after all. I will be interested to see if anyone comes up with a cheap supplyer.

I was on the phone with my brother, talking about what he has aquired lately for his survival kit....he told me he paid $60 for a hammock...I thought this sounds like alot...and I was also thinking that my little brother is getting smarter than his old fat brother too. I have all kinds of kit...no hammock. it really is a great way to sleep...we had some jungle ones when we were kids, and used them in the summer months up in the North East...a must have with all the horseflies!

Brigade Quartermasters has three hammocks for under $15, albeit without a mosquito net.

I have a Travel Hammock and have used a piece of inexpensive Coghlan's mosquito netting to rig up a cover for my head while sleeping. I'm new to the hammock thing, so I don't have tons of experience here. But it seem to work for me, and I'll do it again.

Thanks guys...always blow me away with all the info I'm not finding...thanks, Gene

Great video. I assume paracord could be used in place of the rope in the video?

That's a great big screaming negative.

Paracord is great, but if it breaks, it breaks at the knot due to tension and torque. Some knots can kill up to 50% of your strength. So, 250 pounds of Raven, plus hammock, in a swamp, using paracord for the line.... Yeah, that sucked. Snapped right at the knot.

I've looked at some of the technical cords for climbing, but I keep returning to my old stand by, 1" nylon webbing. Wrap the middle around one tree a couple of times, the ends around another tree with a good metal buckle (not fastex, they just don't like the strain), and a hammock in the middle is good. Even if I loose half the strength, good 1" webbing is only rated for around 4000 pounds. :) Stronger, lighter, smaller and less expensive than good rope, and easy to pack to- just roll it up.

And no more soggy, drippy, cranky Raven at 3am. :D

I've owned this one for a few years and I love it:

It packs up nice and small, and combined with a tarp it makes a great shelter that's easy to set up. I was a little worried about how well it would hold up when I first got it. . . I figured it would last a season or so, but it's been going strong for about three and I'm pretty sure it will have at least on or two more.

One thing to keep in mind about sleeping in hammocks is that it can get pretty chilly because you loose heat from underneath. Even if you're in a sleeping bag, the insulating material is compressed under you and doesn't work as effectively. I've seen articles on-line that suggest using a closed cell foam mat underneath you in the hammock for insulation. I tried it the other day on the back porch, and wow, what a huge difference!

I dont post often but I feel I have something to add on this one. Do a google search for "Skeeter Beeter Hammock". Very reasonably priced and only 20oz. I have just ordered 2 of them. I can not comment on the quality personally but can tell you I have heard very good things. I hope this helps.

I use a local variant made from hang glider nylon. They are very light, no nets, as we don't need them in this area. Hard to believe but central Brazil has less mosquitoes than Pennsylvania.

The back will get very cold if you don't insulate it. I use a GI poncho liner rigged up to hang snug to my back on the outside of the hammock. It works very well and is easy to set up. Mac

As someone that didnt sleep in the hammock for long how comfy is it??? sometimes when i see that you end up sleeping in sort of a slight curve. Wont that hurt your back??? Im just thinking how good would it compare to sleeping on the ground which i do very well.
Does anyone own one of the campmor $20 hammock?? is it any good. It sure is cheap and light. The other hammocks they sell looks the same except they added the bug netting. Reading all the posts on here makes me want to get one for the next trip..

In a Brazilian style hammock you lay at a diagonal and as a result there isn't as much of a curve to the bottom. Much more comfortable than any other hammock I've ever tried. I've slept in mine a number of times, and I find that I can lay on my back, side or even stomach comfortably, the only difficulty being that I have a hard time finding a comfortable place for my arms sometimes when on my side or stomach. If you're car camping or just out in the back yard, a pillow under your bum will let you lay even flatter and helps stop some of your warmth from escaping through the bottom of the hammock.

I'm a pretty big guy is there a hammock that'll hold me? 250ish I don't want to fall on my ass in the middle of the night cause my hammock broke.
