I'm looking at an Ontario ASEK or like.

Something in the $50 or so range to take out backpacking leave in the truck and just beat the heck out of it.

Any suggestions? I'm looking for a proven used beater knife.

Thanks.

Look at the Condor Kumunga or Rodan. I used the Kumunga to baton through countless logs, chop and generally beat the snot out of and it took it very well. The grips aren't the best shape from the factory but they are easy to shape to fit your hand better. They come with nice sheaths and can be had for quite a bit less than $50.

I have a rodan and although I don't really care for it myself it wouldbe a perfect beater.

In addition to the Condor's mentioned a Blackjack Grunt and Ontario Rat 3 come to mind as decent & cheap beaters.

I got a cold steel pendleton lite hunter works pretty good, only 15-20 bucks.

For a well made knife in your price range, I wouldn't call either a "beater", check out the Buck Nighthawk or 119 Special.

If you don't mind spending closer to $70, I would recommend a Becker BK2. Pretty much a sharpened prybar. Go ahead, make it's day and beat the daylights out of it.

That's a good suggestion, and I see it for closer to $60 than $70.

They are ugly as heck but I have not been able to break my Cold Steel Bushman fixed blade. It takes a good edge because it is sk-5 steel and holds on to it for long enough. You can throw it, baton or make a spear, it will take it all in stride. Its also dirt cheap. BTW, the folder bushman is crap.

I have a cold steel kukri that i picked up for less than twenty bucks that i would recommend. Ive had it for over 5 years and have beat the hell out of it and its held up like a champ! takes a good edge and holds it well. I moded mine a little, reshaped the handle a bit to make it more comfy for me and removed the coating and added a bit of a swedge. Between that and my little bushcrafter i reckon i could take care of just about anything i needed to do in the woods. If ya want something smaller the bk14 is supposed to be a little beast and its 1095 which i personally love for my beaters.

My beater is a CS GI tanto, great for $20 bucks. It's mostly used for yard and fire-pit duty.

Well, I like the Ka-Bar Large Heavy Bowie which goes for around fifty bucks. Despite its name, it's quite light, strong and capable for tactical use and batoning. The Ontario Marine Raider is heavy, strong and good for sustained chopping and batoning, but is too heavy for defense except against possibly bear. Just about anything by either company will fit the bill.
