The one I have is a light duty one made from a washing-machine motor, my father made it, DON'T LOOK AT ME! :) If you have a Craftsman club saver's club card, you may get some good savings on a Craftsman one.

You may want to post this in Knife makers forum thing...

If you can find a Delta SA180, they usually go for around $100 or less. It's 1x42" belt sander with an 8" disc, really a great buy for the money. If you're going the super cheap route, you can try one of the 1x30" sanders from www.harborfreight.com, but personally I feel you're money is better spent on the Delta.

I bought a $99 belt/disc sander combo unit years and years and years ago at Harbor Freight and that old thing is still going great. It uses a 4"x 24" belt.

But if you are talking about a 2" belt then check out the Kalamazoo Grinders at Knife and Gun Finishing Supplies. http://www.knifeandgun.com/

I have one of those too and it has a very nice Baldor motor on it, the belt is easy to change and it has been a very good economy grinder for my hobby of knife making also. I forget what I paid for it but the thing was a good buy. Seems like it was 300 plus or minus dollars for this one. (48" belts x 2" width) They now offer a 2"x72" belt option for the attachment.

I can't find that they show this on the internet. So, this is from page 29 of their new catalog. I really like this grinder. For the money it seems to be one of the better deals going right now if you ask me.

I buy my belts and other burrs and discs and such from A&H Abrasives in Casper Wyoming. 1-800-831-6066. I buy in bulk like once every 3 years.

They have always been priced right even for small orders but if you buy in amounts over $300 at a time you get an additional 15% off. They used to offer 10% off on orders over $100. I haven't ordered from them in a while now.

I just got a Delta SA-150 1"x30" belt with a 5" disk from Ace Hardware for $80. Then I got some belts off ebay a pack of 25 belts for 12.50 plus shipping. Should be coming soon.

My little Delta works great on sheaths and reprofiling knives. My Becker 9 now has a nice convex edge on it and a sharpened clip. :D

More input on the super cheap mentioned above: the 1" x 30" at Harbor Freight. I got mine on sale for around $30.

If you haven't previously owned a belt sander I think you will like it - at least to start with. You will like it because you can't believe all the things you can do with it (that you couldn't do before) for the small amount of money.
It is handy for many things besides knives.

After you use it for a while you will realize its limitations and want a better quality machine. When you are ready to move up to a real belt sander you will always have the Harbor Freight for dirty work.

It was better quality than I expected.

For belts: I have had good luck with Discount Abrasives.

That's the same place I ordered my belts from. :) They seem to be really good. And they have a great selection.

I got a Craftsman 1 HP 2"x42" three wheel belt sander. It's a bit beefier than the 1"x30" models I've seen. I just picked up some ceramic belts from Tru Grit today for it and hope to try them out this weekend. It's not a 2"x72", but was pretty inexpensive and will remove quite a bit of material with the right belts. It runs a bit fast for use with finer grit finishing belts from what I can tell.
