Cheap but still pretty sweet...BM Rant

I picked up a Benchmade Rant this weekend. I know it is an inexpensive knife and is made in taiwan but it is actually a pretty sweet blade. I think it feels great, looks great, and seems to be nicely put together. I love the simple hunter look to it...maybe I am just too easy to please.

I haven't handled the rant in person but I recently snagged an offsider (n690 version) for $50 new. While the BM Reds are cheap...they certainly aren't junk. I think they're an excellent value. I consider them pure users. They aren't fancy looking but they get the job done. I don't mind giving them a little abuse....and isn't that what they're all about anyways? I'd rather use and abuse a $50 knife than a $500 one. They really aren't worth collecting or bragging about but they are great for what they are designed for. I'll check out a Rant next time I see one. They look pretty good.

The red class BMs are, from what I have seen, probably the best value knives on the market at the moment.

atomd, since you have the Offsider, would you mind telling me if it's flat or hollow ground?

I have a couple Fecas Gamers, in N690 and 440C both. For the price, they're excellent knives - tough, solid, sharp, simple. The sheath on the Gamer isn't anything to write home about, but it's secure.

They're good knives for the car/office/camping bag/etc. Like most everyone else says, they're certainly not something I worry about abusing - while my Nimraevus M2 is a much better knife, if I'm going to do something silly, the Gamer's a better choice.

I'm not AtomD, but I do play him on TV. :)

My Offsider is hollow ground, as is my Gamer, the only two modern Benchmades I've seen that weren't flat ground. (Are the Rants hollow?) Maybe Steve Fecas is a hollow grind maker?

I like my Offsider - it's pretty much a pure fighter, all bowie. It can chop, lightly, I guess it might be able to skin, but it is balanced and designed to float in your hand, balanced just a hair ahead of the index finger, and stab or slash. The Gamer is, for its size, a better utility knife (as well as a first class boot/belt holdout piece.)

I'm not saying it's not a hard use knife, I'm just saying it's optimized for particular uses. :D

My friend just bought one, and i find i'm always playing around with it. Its really a nice knife, and a good price. hope you have fun with it.
