I've had one of these for several years now. I got it a a junk store for $4. As it turns out, it's been a fairly reliable tool. Seems to be cast, takes a reasonable edge. Even if it doesn't last long, it files very easily. I use it for minor chopping/splitting and occasionally hammering. I'm really surprised it's lasted this long.

Is there any comparable decent quality tool on the market? I've always wanted to get a decent replacement, but have never really seen anything in quite the same form. Closest might be some Estwing carpenter's hatchets, but believe it or not, I prefer the way the chinese thing handles and carries.

I have one thats been hanging around forever . I am not sure if mine is cast or not , I bought it to convert it into a thrower and decided it was a little too chunky , Mine seems likew a tough little tool as well . I paid 4 dollars for it twenty years ago so things have not changed much .

Just watch your hand if your splitting kindling, the prybar can make a real mess of your hand holding the timber, if your not careful. I like them as well, however I've ground off the prybar on one that I use for kindling. Very cheap useful tool

I got a bunch that I put into my companies Y2K deployment kits. Not a bad tool for the price. Got them for about $5 a piece. I did have to glue the rubber grips on all of them, as they had a tendency to come flying out if not. I keep one out and about, and it comes in handy at times.

I have one in my shot that I grab whenever I need to hack/pry/split something..got it at harbor freight a few years back for somewhere around four bucks
