I just got a set of stomes and I'm happily learning to sharpen. What I need is crummy, dull knives to practice on. Any ideas on where I could get these cheap--I mean really cheap. Used is even better.

My thanks for any ideas.

Oh, and I don't plan on using these for anything but sharpening, so other flaws, like lousy blade play, are fine. In most cases I'll throw them out after I get them up to snuff.

Got any old kitchen knives that have not been sharpened in a while? Thats what I started sharpening for practice.

+1 on that, I got our old chicago cutlery block out of the kitchen when I got my edgepro and went to town, by the last knife I was very proficient and I could push cut newspaper will all of the knives.

Cheap, easy and quick with very soft steel.

Some steels, especially the early stainless, simply cannot take an edge. You do not need to buy knives to practice sharpening. The kitchens of America are full of dull knives. Just offer to sharpen the knives of anyone you know.
