Cheap Etcher Concept Check

I’ve been interested in something to get me started etching without spending much and was going to build a Chris Crawford style etcher but also saw a concept that seemed very cheap and easy. You take a 120V to 12VAC wall charger block and run the positive lead to a clip for the knife and the negative lead goes to a half wave rectifier/diode to convert to DC so the negative clip comes off before or after that diode whether you want to mark or etch. Does this make sense or seem a viable option? Thanks!

So long as you have the voltage it should be fine. I built an etcher from a doorbell transformer I paid $20 but for. Added some switches for on and of and a bridge rectifier so I can switch between AC and DC.

If you just want to etch without making it black a 9v battery will work. If you want a black mark you need AC. Very easy to test out on scrap.

Good deal thanks for allowing me to bounce it off someone else. I might just make the nicer one to have something that lasts we’ll see.
