Haha gotcha. I mean Mora and Opinel. Just got my first two Mora's and my first Opinel in 8 years! You really can't beat these for affordable high quality user knives, it's been said many times before.

I haven't really messed with the Mora's yet, but I had some fun sharpening and oiling my Au Carbone No.10 Opinel. Arrived with a stupid rough edge not good for anything really, but my 1000 grit Japanese water stone made short work of that, followed up of course by 6000 grit. I can't believe how easily it took a razor edge! Good steel, good grind, good god! This is the kind of knife everyone should learn how to sharpen with. For $12 you can't lose! I wish I had waited and set up the camera.

The others are a 511 carbon and a Craftline "All Around" stainless. They came with good edges already and I'll use them until they're dull and then do a video on sharpening.

Finally some knives I can use and not worry about!

YouTube review to follow shortly (turbo311).

So funny... YES, some knives are just so nice (and expensive) you almost worry too much about keeping them nice and not diving into the rough and tumble!

I've yet to get an Opinel... but I'm slowly crawling in that direction. :D

same here, also the same about a more knife. When you spend so little on a tough knife you don't mind beating up on it cuz you know you can always replace it

Opinels are such a pleasure to sharpen. You can choose to put then flat on stone / paper and get that ultrasharp slicer, or can just make microbevel with few swipes.

I got huge "serration" on my mora just little while ago, but after 10-15 minutes I got it off and have scarysharp blade ready to use.

These are indeed working class heroes of knives.

The #6 gets used regularly for all sorts of things.
The #2 lives on my keyring.
I haven't really found a use for the #10 yet, but I'm sure I will.

Agreed ...... but in value/quality ratio, a lot of the more basic Victorinox SAKs sure come close.

blade knife, I guess I would spend it but would only own one or two of each. Thank goodness for Opinels and Moras, because I can own LOTS of each and spend less than a single "good" knife. These two are plenty good enough for me. I especially like the fact that many of the Scandi manufacturers offer blades only, saving people like me tons of cash while providing the opportunity for some fun making my own handles and sheaths (saving even more money, which I can then take and spend on Skeet).

I can't believe it took me this long to start using Swedish steel, OMG sharp! Cuts wood like nothing I've used before, including Dozier or Murray Carter, wow. Best way to sharpen? It can't tell if it's a zero grind, convex, what? I'm afraid stones will add a second bevel.

Is a Fallkniven F1 this good? That might be my next one if so.

Cool video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdQZrjtAPDI

For those of you who know about Moras...

The 511 carbon has a rough, black, pitted-looking spine. Is it done like that to save cost or does it have another purpose? I was going to polish it to be like the Craftline "All Around". Who makes kydex for these things?

Also, Why was the 510 discontinued? How hard are they to find right now?

IIRC Marion David Poff (BFC user name) was making kydex for several different knives and Moras were among them. Might be worth hitting him up.

JRE has several options in leather for the Mora if that interests you.

Let us know what you decide to do for sheaths. I was recently gifted a Mora by a friend.... and I like it :D There may be more in my future.

So does anyone know why the 510 and it's slightly larger brother were discontinued? I'm trying to find some... I don't want to just modify 511's or 546's.

I really like the Craftline All Around stainless, but where's the HighQ carbon version? I see it with a gray and red handle on the Mora website but nobody is selling it. I'm thinking about buying the carbon Clipper in green, but as far as I know the Craftline TopQ that I have is 12C27 stainless which is very good, may negate the need for carbon steel.

What you think?

What steel is the regular stainless?

Why do those knives have that symbol, you know...it stands for "Two in the pink one in the stink"

you can get the carbon highq from ragnar, he also has the carbon and stainless clipper. best thing is shipping is a flat $6 regardless of how many you order so order a bunch at one time.

Get the new Companion instead of the Clipper. It has a longer tang and an improved sheath. I fell in love with the things when my order of them arrived and they're gone already! Good thing I've got more on the way--maybe I'll be able to snag one for myself this time. :p

I've been carrying a midsize Opinel for at least fifteen years, and just today finally gotten one of the Opinel Garden Knives. It's wonderful!

I have an Opinel No. 8 Carbon in my pack--best apple slicer I've ever seen besides a Victorinox paring knife. I modified mine by sanding an "easy-open" cutout into the handle.

Hey, I never thought of that, what a great idea. :)

I know what I'll be doing tonight!
