cheap firesteel..

I was looking at the thread "firesteel handles" or whatever it was called, and seen some requests for handles.. well, after seeing all these firesteels being sold online for 12 bucks and up, (and sometimes 20 bucks, which is just plain rediculous) i said " so thats why they want to make their own.. i see..."
Well I was downstairs workin out, and while staring across the room, i noticed one of the pullchains for the lightbulb... was identical to this handle:

So i got the idea (if it hasnt already been thought up here yet) of getting this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190083002364
for 7 bucks out the door, and then just inserting the rod, into the pull chain tab you just yanked off the chain, drill it, and tie the little hacksaw blade to the new ferro rod handle, and bam, a 7 dollar ferro rod complete.
 
thats exactly what my dad told me long ago. I soon figured it out when i was in my 20's lol. Now, i do EVERYTHING myself.
 
Buddiiee that's nice. Like they say, common sense ain't that common. I was one of those suckers who paid almost $20 for his Firesteel. Now I feel like a tool.

no problem :) always glad to help. i always though these high speed firesteels were too much. by the time you find a nice say, kershaw online for 11 bucks say, theres always 5 bucks shipping. 16 bucks? screw that. buy one for 7, and throw your own pull chain handle on that sucker for free lol. 7 bucks out the door. done. forgetaboutit.
 
I had a thought of epoxying the firesteel into the lid of one of the spycapsules, filling the capsule with cotton balls and petroleum jelly, epoxying a striker on the outside of the capsule. The PJ should keep the firesteel from corroding so fast, not to mention being in the sealed capsule instead of exposed to weather and sweat on my keyring, and testing shows that even globs of PJ on the firesteel does not stop it from throwing sparks, though some of then will hiss rather dramatically on the way down.

But I never did. Did not find or make something that would make a decent striker but that would not look absolutely stupid attached to the outside of the spycapsule.
