I have bought two knives in the past few years. Both of them are flick out knives about 3-4 inches. Which is exactly what i want.

I have a Gerber Paraframe which the locking mechanism began to become massively loose. Tightning the blade nut or whatever did not solved the wiggle foward and backward... it did solve the wiggle side to side tho.

I recently bought a Gerber Harsey Air Ranger off ebay(20 bucks). It is one of the older blue ones. I think its a nicer knife than the paraframe, but it also has come loose.

I constantly play with a knife when i first get it. I just mess around flicking it out over and over again while i am watching TV... kinda like a stress reliever or something. The new knife was very tight at first but now it is loose. I bought a TORX t6 and took it apart to see the problem, and it looks like the locking bar has worn a notch on it where the blade is probably harder than the locking bar i guess. The blade moves back and forth just a tiny bit now.... but i find it annoying.

Is there any flick out knife like those... that is under 100 bucks or so (i am willing to spend more this time) that will NOT come loose like those knives??

THANKS

Sounds like a question for the knife reviews and testing forum. Those guys are pretty helpful in figuring out wear and tear issues. Only help I can offer is to look for metal bushings next to the blade instead of plastic, they seem to wear better. Buck imports a line of framelocks that are a step up from the paraframe. It may help to go to an assisted opener, which will open with a factory set amount of force that may be lower than what you have been experiencing. It is possible that you might do better by replacing less expensive knives more often than more expensive knives less often. They will all wear with use. Hope this helps.

Gerber has loose pivots on most of their knives. To fix this, you can put a drop of blue Loctite on the pivot screw threads, let dry, then re-assemble.

But if your Air Ranger is actually damaging itself, you should contact Gerber and send it in. Gerber may not have fantastic quality knives, but they do have fantastic customer service.

Either way, you may just want to look at a higher quality of knife if yours keep coming apart on you.

BM 551 Griptillian...They flip easily, lock up like a safe, flip closed just as easily(the axis lock is wonderful for that), 154CM steel, and can be had for around $65.00-$75.00.

so this griptillian will NOT come loose on me???

even if I like to flick it out over and over again???

or at least..... if a knife comes loose on me.... i should be able to tighten it back up

is there any website that i could educated myself about the different types of steels and their qualities in knives???

a general knife information site???

You're on it. Make heavy use of the search function and you'll find many of your questions answered.

There's a ton of info on steels, sharpening, handle materials, and just about anything else you'd want to know in here. As a hint, I tend to go to earlier topics on subjects and work my way forward.

There are also a few books which can be highly enlightening, and you'll read about those while searching around. Good luck, and welcome!
