what do you guys use? i have a lansky and a gatco, and i use oil with the course stones. what is a good substitute? thanks!

use soapy water to rough it in. Then finish it dry with light or no pressure, it will get sharper dry Leon

I use WD 40 and mieral oil. Simple Green sounds like a double whammy there!
We've used Simple Green for a long time, from a recommendation from someone who slips my mind at the moment. In a recent Blade magazine, Wayne Goddard also recommended it as a clean, easy to purchase alternative to oil.

Simple Green sounds great. Wayne Goddard has been recommending smokeless, odorless lamp oil (refined kerosene) for a long time as well (it works great by itself or mixed about 3:1 with mineral oil). Did Wayne mention if he likes the Simple Green better than the kerosene?

He seemed to imply that he was going to switch to it almost exclusively, or at least a generic version he could purchase at a local dollar store.
