I ordered 3 of these recently, 1 for myself and 2 as novelty presents for friends and relatives that enjoy guns, knives and outdoor stuff.

If you're not familiar with these knives, they're basically a freakishly large Pakistani folder loosely styled after a Buck 110. Price is about $13. The blade measures 8.25" and the edge is 7.25". Closed it measures 9.75" and the overall length open is 18". Basically, it's just freakin' huge.

Having played with them now for a few days, I have decidedly mixed opinions.

First off, these are not diamonds in the rough. Quality wise, they are typically Pakistani. They come dull and the edge is rough. Although they will take an edge, I doubt they will hold it for long. The pins are far too small for a knife this size. Two of the three knives had sloppy lockup and the blade rubbed the liner when they were closed. The third seemed much better in that regard, (I'm keeping that one). The blade is made of "TR99" steel, which I'm guessing is 420 or 440A and the scales are something called pakkawood which appears to be a grey wood laminate. The finish work is pretty crude, but all in all it's not a bad looking knife.

Despite that though, one thing that is apparent is that this isn't really a bad concept. The knife will fit in a jeans pocket with only about an inch sticking out, so you could probably carry it without arousing any suspicion and once you have it unfolded it is truly more like a sword than a pocket knife. I've never been one to think that folding knives were a good defensive weapon, but this knife makes me question that. Built properly it would be an awesome weapon. As it is though, with the sloppy lockup and undersized axis pin, I'm a little skeptical about how well it would hold up to hard use. I'd also be very reluctant to carry it as a weapon just because of the potential legal problems involved and because a handgun is without question a better weapon.

Although it is a Buck style folder with no thumb stud, the blade is massive enough that it can be swung open one handed with a little practice.

All in all, I can't really recommend it, but I wouldn't tell anyone to stay away either. It's an interesting novelty knife, potentially a good weapon and dirt cheap, but the general low quality and likely hassles involved with carrying one would make it completely impractical for most people.
