How many of you out there have ever had
a few bucks burning a hole in your pocket
and went out and bought a "cheap" knife ?
I recently received my order from Bud K
in the form of a MASTER "silver jet"; a very
racey looking push dagger ( I figured,"why not
?" as it's pretty hard to "botch" a fixed blade )
I wasn't disappointed though, I rather like
this recent aquisition. Just for the sake of
aquisition. If you're curious about how thknife looks, check out Bukww.com under
"new additions", I think page 6.

I bought a $5 shrade pen knife from Walmart that said made in Ireland. I was disapointed even though my expectation was low. The expectations should have been lower I guess.

I'm not much for buying junk but there's a whole bunch of inexpensive knives that can scratch an itch while you're waiting for something a little more special. I could see buying a whole set of Opinel's, quality knives at very afffordable prices. I've seen a few custom designed handles on some, but never really any for sale. I could see collecting those. While I was waiting for a custom dagger I bought a Lindner Boott Dagger in stag, nice knife for the money. AG Russell's Cutting Edge catalog has knives at every price point. If you look at some of the used knives you could build a very nice collection of users for a fraction of what NIB would cost you.

Sometimes you just need a New Knife, even if it's not brand new.
Scratch that itch any way you can. ;)

Getting a new SAK or small slipjoint every once in a while is an inexpensive new knife fix for me when I'm not in the market for something more pricey. Some are very good users.

Hey Guys..

Yaa I'm not one for buying crap either..

When I get an itch and funds are low I'll hit a gun/knife show and pick up a small stockman or SAK...

I'll even do trades with forumites,, a kind of knives for sheaths type of program.. If ya got something to trade and need a sheath,,drop me a note I'm always interested..

The problem with the itch though is that it happens far too often than I have money for or sheaths to trade...
I'm pushing well over 100 knives now..
Its no longer a hobby,, its an addiction:)

How is that a push knife? It has a T handle, but the end on that thing looks really blunt to me.

I've done this and it changed my knife tastes forever. I bought a Mora #1 on impulse, simply because it was so cheap. To this day, a couple of years later, I'm convinced there is no better user knife available....

2 weeks ago I upgraded my SAK knockoff for the real deal. I wan them all now! And I have the Doctor's knife and Stockman bug too. But, I'll always be drooling over Hossoms, Simoniches and knives of their ilk. :)

Boker Stiletto Letter Opener: Bought way back for $18 ... best damn Quick Knife Fix I ever Bought.

Yep, I know the feeling.

I usually head out to Walmart and buy one of their Ontario Old Hickory knives, then get to work Frankensteining it. Fooling around with different grinds and profiles and handles and finishes until I find something I like. The great part of it is, once you get the hang of it you can start producing just the kind of knife you desire at a very low cost. It started out as little more than a time waster, but I have several that turned out really well, and I may never buy another fixed blade again as long as I can make my own.

If you're gonna go to all that trouble, just buy kits or blades from Texas Knifemaker's Supply or the like. Get the parts you need, probably cheaper and turn out a better product.

Just an idea.

If it weren't for cheap yardsale, and flea market knives, many people wouldn't have a collection. I'm not talking about the $2-$10 cheapies from over seas, but the old Colonial's, Imperial's, and the like, I've amassed quite a few old knives from 1940's and up. Some were unusual patterns, like a Colonial Glazers pattern from the 1950's-60's with a built in glass cutter, and a lot of advertising pieces from the same era. I guess what I'm tring to say is I like cheap knives for a quick fix.

I considered that, but I can get an Ontario for what I would pay for just shipping on an order if I were to get a kit. I really don't look on it as "trouble", primarily because I enjoy doing it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, this last weekend at a swap meet I bought a Master-brand lockback 2-blade folder with a 4" clip point, and the other blade has a sharp saw, screwdriver, and bottlecap opener. Real neat cheapo fix, I couldn't pass up on this since it looked so handy and "non-tactical" with the wood handles, silver bolsters and leather sheath. This will definitely be a camp/loaner/beater knife.

time for my deep dark horrible confession.....

I bought a China knock off of a CRKT Crawford/Kasper folder, and I'm REALLY getting a kick out of the damn thing. I paid $5 for it at a friends gunshop and the knife is actually pretty impressive. It's a 440 blade with zero blade play, side to side or top to bottom, and actually has a good, solid lock up. as much as I HATE to admit it, the thing locks up much better than alot of my $100 + liner locks. I even spinewhacked it pretty damn hard, and it didn't fold. (i get pretty bold with knives in this budget when it comes to spine whacks):D And amazingly enough the knife even took a good hair popping edge and does a fair job of retaining it. It has decent partial serrations, and a good beefy ambidextrous thumb stud. Amazingly enough, the blade is pretty damn evenly ground on both sides too.

I feel guilty cuz I really do like it, but it's cloned SO shamelessly from the CRKT that it even has a cut out on the right handle where CRKT had put the LAWKS in the knife.

buying knives of this type REALLY isn't in my usual nature, but I had what I view as a pretty good reason to purchase a couple expendables.

I just got an old job back working traffic at the airport. Now, as I understand the rules I'm allowed to carry a knife or multi tool while directing traffic, and around the baggage claim, but not past the security checkpoints i ocassionally have to venture past.

Now i couldn't work without some form of a knife on my person, I've been carrying the darn things so habitually for so long that I damn near walk lopsided if I don't have one clipped to my pocket.

with the purchase of a couple expendables, I can still have a (reasonably) decent cutting implement on my person while working, but if I have to go past a security checkpoint I won't feel bad having a friend hold it, giving it away, breaking it in half and throwing it in a dumpster or whatever.

I don't really feel entirely very warm, fuzzy and happy buying a shameless clone, but the thing works well for its intended purpose, And until I have enough money to consider more expensive USA made knives as easily expendable, it's pretty well what I'm gonna have to stick to.

I picked up a Shrade Old Timer slip-joint for $7 or $8 a year or so ago. It's the 12OT (peanut?) single blade model with a carbon steel blade. Once I got the hang of sharpening the blade (my only carbon steel blade!) I found it would take a nice, serviceable edge and actually holds it better than my Victorinox knives... I'm tired of my Victorinox Executive and I lost my Spyderco Dragonfly so this is now my primary EDC!

I bought it as an impulse and to be honest it's actually one of my favorite knives now. It goes everywhere with me (although my Spyderco Starmate occasionally tags along for recreational use).
