Can someone please tell me how people on Ebay can make and sale Damascus knives for 20 dollars.. They say they are hand made???

They are made in Pakistan and China where labor is cheap. Materials are also suspect on most of these.

"Materials are suspect" is a polite way of saying there is no way to predict what metals the damascus is made from. Bear in mind that India is where a LOT of things go to become something else. Old naval warships, for example. They take things like battleships apart and recycle the metal. Sometimes the metal becomes fire hydrants. Some times it becomes man hole covers. Sometimes it becomes knives. I doubt that the folks getting the metal to make knives are very discriminating about what metals they will put into a knife they will sell for $20.

Reminds me of a commercial I just saw advertising a whole kitchen knife set for 19.95. Something like 10 knives, scissors, sharpening steel, carrying case. Oh, and they never dull, of course. The last set of knives anyone would need! I don't even see how they make em that cheap....even if the knives were made from recycled tuna fish cans and cheap labor.

The Knives they are talking about are suspect along with the steel. At the same time remember that Wootz steel originated in India and what they call Pakistan today and the king of Syria paided some of these craftsman to move to Damascus and teach their craft there Hundreds of years ago.
I personally have gotten world class Damascus in the past from India.
I don't think any of that "stuff" you see on ebay contains any of that quality of steel

sorry folks but I had to do it. I would definitely fork out 9.99 for the incredible Ginsu knife set 1978 ;0)

Thanks everyone. It upsets me that people buy this stuff and compare it to quality knives

Quality is relative to what you know about quality. You should see the crap that the poor folk in the village use.
Those fancy Damascus blades are a big step up!

But IT'S DAMASCUS. It must be great. All Damascus is magical and will slice/scare a silk scarf in half from 6 feet away with a simple wave in the air. That is why people buy these knives. I had a knifemaker tell me about this great knife his friend bought from England. Damascus with real bone handle for $49.95. It was a really cool knife according to him. He brought it over to me at a show and it was obviously a Pakistani/Indian knife. This was a maker though he did not make Damascus. He was fooled. I can just imagine what the general public would think.
