Do you guys ever look at some of these cheat damascus pakistan knives? Honestly some of them look pretty darn good, its a shame none of them are of decent quality. It just boggles my mind, if you're gonna put alot of care into the aesthetics and finish of a knife, why not make it with a half decent blade?

I have a Pakistani damascus laguiole and it is actually pretty well made. Not as refined as a heavenly Fontenille-Pataud but not bad either, and it looks good.

sometimes you can get a surprise with a cheap knife that may not appear to be quality, but not always.

one of the first knives i had was a 110 knockoff made in pakistan. i was a kid and knew nothing about proper use, proper care, and put that knife through some hard work. it was previously my grandfathers and he also beat the heck out of it. he likely got it used at a flea market. but its still today a solid knife with lots of life left in it.

I'll agree that some of them do look nice in pictures, but when you get it in your hand its usually a different story. It all depends on what you want in a knife though. The cheap Pakistan knives have pretty horrid fit and finish and theres no telling how they heat treat their steel let alone what steel it is. So for use I do not recommend them as their are many quality knives for the same price ie. Mora, Opinel, Condor, Victorinox, Svord. And if you're buying them for their beauty unfortunately I think you won't be very impressed.

no lookee. no wantee. bad juju.

With all due respect, what exactly does that video prove? That a $20 knife was shipped with a dull edge? I'll agree that one cannot expect much in the way of quality for that price but I'd like to see what it would do with a little sharpening and/or improvement to blade geometry.

Made in USA knives are never shipped dull. Amirite?

Junk.:barf: I am in line for a custom from Ariel Salaverria.:D I got in before he stopped taking orders. Now that is damascus! I don't need anything that bad that I will buy junk just to have it.

What's up with these phony (or not) cheap Damascus Pakistani blades? Are they etched or patina or real Damascus?

Now that's the right way to baton!

Exactly what I was thinking. Take karate, learn "hammer fist," use for batonning cheap knives through vegetables! :D

Real damascus. I have one I got on eBay last year and it took a good edge. IMO it was a steal for the price.

Pakistan?

Not a chance.

I have always wanted to get my hands on that Primitive Bowie and a couple of their damascus knives just to see if they could be sharpened and usable. But based on what I've seen with other Pakistani knives I wouldn't spend more than $5 on them, that way I could dull them up for trainers and not feel like I lost anything.

i wont even bother to sharpen any cheap stainless pakistan knives on my paper wheels. the steel is so soft its a waste of time and grit. some of the really old carbon steel pakistan knives from the 80's however are not too bad.

I made this thread cause I found a carbon steel fixed blade "apache bowie" that I had seen on ebay previously at a swap meet. I figured hey, its just 10$ and it looks nice, maybe it'll make a nice knife. I have had luck with a good carbon steel knife from china (a kanetsune ripoff, "smithing steel" turned out to be a carbon steel core laminated with 420j, though the lamination on this knife was pointless it still made a great fixed blade). It took an ok edge but that edge disappeared the second it touched wood.

Too bad too, I like the look of the thing. White bone handle, no gaurd, nice blade shape; sadly the thing was just no good for use.

I know I'm new to the site but I thought I'd get my 2 cents in anyway.
I've been a machinist for 22 years and have been making knives and swords as a hobbie for a few years.
I have a small but manageable knife collection which includes a few Damascus steel knives from Pakistan.
So far Ive had great luck with them. Are they on the lower end of the scale, sure but the most Ive paid for one is $45. I use my subhilt Bowie as my camping knife and I beat the hell out of it and it still hold a decent edge. That said there is no way I would ever take one of my very expensive custom made pieces camping. These knives serve a great purpose just just have to think about what you're going to use it for. The biggest diffrance you'll see if you get one, is the finish. My more expensive pieces are smooth where the eBay specials are rough to the touch but again $45 compared to $800 to $3000
