Hi guys
Thinking of getting just a small do-it-all sharpener for occasional maintenance (mostly own vg10 blades, around 3")

I see there's a lot of options but not too sure where to start
Some tips/recommendations would be greatly appreciated from you all!

I'd rather buy something replaceable (as in can lose it and will just order another one :P) so not too fancy and cheap in price. Maybe in a keychain form factor or just pocket size would be good

Thanks!

This might be a good choice to keep your blades sharp when away from home http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=DMTF70E

If you want a do it all then you will need something with more grits and a little bigger. The dia-folds http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/s...eqCATE CODEdatarq=dmt&eqKEYWORDdatarq=diafold will cover you in that aspect but may be more than you want to spend.

Spyderco makes a two sided pocket ceramic hone that would do well also. http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=SP303MF

Thanks for your reply knifenut

Yes the diafolds are a bit more expensive than what I expected to pay but not by far as I was aiming around the 20$

does is worth paying the extra 10-15$ and go with one of these?

Also, now that I've seen the two-sided that are around the 40$ but some having diamond coating, I'm wondering if I shouldn't go with one of thee, even if it's twice the price I originally expected to pay. I currently have a sharpmaker at home but no diamond rods...

And to complicate the matter, the more I read about convex sharpening the more I'm tempted to go toward this... Your opinion?

Thanks again

O.

Convex edges are very easy to sharpen once you get the hang of it but they don't work for everything. Hand sharpening will naturally convex the edge and on most folder that's all thats needed. Convex bevels and edges work best on fixed blades. I also like the level of sharpness diamonds yield, much better than anything else I have used.

"Are the dia-folds worth it" hell yes, IMO one of the best all around sharpeners you can get. You could start with the Fine/X-fine but if you want a complete set get the single sided X-coarse the double sided coarse/fine and X-fine/XX-fine, you could sharpen any edge then.

I've pretty much settled on carrying a 4-inch Fallkniven sharpener.

If getting one, keep looking till you find one for less than $20 delivered.

Thanks for all your insights folks!
I'll go with a Dual DMT for now and eventually expend the set, but money is not cheap these days so it might take a while :P

Thanks again!

Edit: Woa sorry KeithAM I didn't see your post - Looks like a nice set at a good price :) But it looks fragile, is it?

It's not a set -- the pic shows 3 different diamond plates. Each plate is $10, with your choice of 3 grits. For touch-ups, the green 1200 grit extra fine is all I need.

These are solid steel plates with a continuous coating of diamonds. No plastic other than the vinyl case they come in. Very tough. I've sat on mine with it in my back pocket. 200 pounds didn't hurt it.

I have seen a 2--plate set from a differrent company that runs about $20.

Here it is:

Hehe cool, I thought it was inexpensive 10$ too :P
I'll recheck every possibilities and make a decision this w/e or next week
Kind of in a rush at the office :P

Why does a convex bevel work better on fixed blades?

Not arguing, just asking.
Thanks
