For a while I had been thinking about making myself a small strop to put in my pack and bring to the woods, or even carry with me daily. The other day I cut the leather tag off the back of my jeans to make IWB carry work better on that particular pair, and got the idea to load up that piece of leather with buffing compound. I tested it and it works well. Easily fits in a wallet or pack for keeping edges sharp in the field. Just thought I'd pass the tip along. Next time you're going to throw out some old jeans, cut the leather off first.

Another great and cheap way to have a portable strop is to cut a piece of cardboard to the size you want, rub the compound on, and fold it in half.

Really like that leather idea. Perfect timing as well, just about to throw away a pear of jeans I found that I don't wear anymore.

We're thinking alike! Yesterday I cut a leather belt blank into a 10" X 2" strop. It is large enough to really polish an edge when laid on a tabletop.

My question is what type of buffing compound do you use? I tried it dry but I assume some very mild abrasive would work better.

Thanks in advance.

Try chromium oxide. Sears carries the green bars in the grinder section. Harbor Freight also has it in their store. Just rub it on the leather and start stropping. There is diamond pastes etc in different Micron, but you don't seem to need that yet. Plenty of info in this forum about strops. Good luck.

White rouge works well. Comes in a stick like a thick piece of chalk. Tandy Leather is a source.
