I got one of the Homier tent tool sale sharpening stone for a dollar and when I try to use it dry, the surface turns to "powder" easily, and when I put oil on it to minimize "powder" build-up, it soakes right in. What should I do? I have tried to put large amouts of oil on it, and I have also soaked it in water. I can wear a groove in it very easily also, it feel like a finer grit than most cheap stones, but the surface crumbles.

Sounds like you got suckered. I used to frequent Homier shows, but they haven't come to town in a while, to further sucker me. They sell a lot of second rate tools, and supplies. Their prices generally match the quality. I witnessed one of theri axes break in an afternoon. The sand paper they sell you for 80cents for a pack doesn't really work, and a compressor I've got from them needed to torn down and rebuilt. Yup, they sell a lot of crap. The only good thing I recall getting from Homier was a pair of work gloves. Those didn't fall apart yet.

Silicon carbide stones can fall apart quickly, they are well known for wearing faster than some other abrasives. If the stone wasn't oiled before you bought it, then it will take a good bit to load it. I use my $8 Craftsman combo stone dry, Mostly just to smooth over the rough finish my D8XX DMT leaves on my edge bevels. The fine side polishes well without falling apart too terribly.

Is it possible it isn,t an oil stone ? I,m no expert . I,m pretty sure there are stones that use oil and stones that use water . If you put oil on a waterstone it will just gum up the works .

it`s not golden colour is it

because you might have bought a large bar of cinder toffee.

only kidding.

regards.

I have a cheap Norton stone I got for around $7 that I will use instead and I will put the cheap one in the tool shead for axes and the like, at least I didn't lose alot of money ($1). I also have a browning fine Arkansas stone in a wooden box my dad gave me, is it a collector item or something, because I have never seen another one? Thanks for the help.

sounds like you got a stone that was supposed to be used with water....!
