I just discovered an inexpensive way to make a leather sheath. Get a leather high top boot and cut the top off and throw the bottom away. If you dont have an old one around you might find one at the local dump or you can pick up a cheap pair at the local thrift store.
I got an old pair of cowboy boots with fancy stitching. I can get a couple of really fancy sheaths with fancy stitching out of it. The leather on the reusable portion of the boots (the top) is in excellent shape yet.
