Read on another forum that guys were picking up the weaved belts for $1 or so from the local thrift stores.

Great source of cheap leather wrap material when you can find those old belts.

I'll be hitting my thrift store soon to see what leather I can find for wraps.

If you go to tandys you can buy a cheap wooden belt cutter that will cut old belts into thongs quite easily, no need to look for braided belts.

Also check out your local Michaels or ACmoore craft store. They have section with leather bobs and bits. I buy bags of scrap lace for my projects. Real tough stuff.

anyone know of a reasonably priced supplier of leather lace suitable for ito? Needs finished edges... or maybe you leather workers know how to do it economically. I have a lace cutter that works but the cut edges don't look right.

Well I bought a couple of leather belts the other day and untied them. I got 4 strips of leather per belt. The leather was embossed with creases from the leather crossing over each strip. Could be a nice pattern. I wonder if they roll over the belt after it is done. Strong enough leather for some projects. If you are cutting your own lace from a flat piece of leather you get one of those lace cutters. Punch or cut a round hole in the center of the leather and pull. The flat leather will spin around as you pull. You can get a fairly long piece of lace that way. The strength of the lace will be dependent of the tanning of the leather and the thickness of the leather and lace.

drive a stout framing nail halfway into a plank. Take a heavy duty box cutter blade and drive one point into the plank, about 1/8 to 1/4" from the nail. Take the belt, make a small 1" slice on the end and insert in between the nail and the razor edge. PULL into the cutting edge, you will get a long length of cord. Repeat until the belt is all sectioned up.
