I want to make a pos for my second knife but i do not want a kit or that fake stuff. I just need some crappy metal 1/4 x 1 x 11 inches. I have had no success trying the major suppliers, if any of you have unwanted extra or know where i could get some junk it would help very much. Im only sixteen so i really do not care on quality as long as it is straight and flat.

Try www.jantzsupply.com. 1095 is about $4 for 1/8 by 1.5x18 and like $6 for 3/16. Easy to grind, makes up into a good knife. Also, try local machinists for O-1. Good luck!

Here's an idea I heard somewhere: head to an auto scrapyard, & pick up some of the "helper" springs from a leaf-spring suspension system. You know, the flat pieces that are U-bolted to the bottom of a leaf spring.

(Wow, a shop-talk question I have an answer to! Woohoo!)

Check in the yellow pages for a spring shop.

Question...

Will those leaf springs have a "memory effect" when used to make knives? I mean, they won't bend back once straightened, will they? lol..

Thanks,

If you forge your knives to shape you will beat the memory right out of leaf springs by the time you get ready for heat treatment. They may be cheap and easy to find but older leaf springs are very high quality bladesmithing steel.

Older GM leaf springs are 5160, a very forgiving steel for a new forger. 5160 makes a darn good big blade.
