Alright guys, I recently picked up a cheap Chinese Flashlight/Stun-gun. It is a S&D Cutlery Leopard TW-308. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. I was planning on it replacing my mini maglite in my EDC or at least putting it in rotation. Normally I wouldn't have bought this but all I did was trade a Byrd Cara Cara 2 for it so I feel I came out in the clear. So really this is a question and a philosophy thread. Should I EDC this light? And is a Stun-Gun a viable nonlethal defense?

As long as it works it should work just fine. However, remember that stun guns can be mitigated by heavy clothing. I would try it on myself, or have someone try it on me (that you trust :P) just to see what it feels like. You don't want a flashlight that delivers a shock like those shocking pens used for jokes if you are depending on it.

Good point, may have a friend of mine try it on me. Seems sketchy though.

Meh, I don't mind stuff like this really. :p I have been hit by them several times before in training, makes for an interesting conversation piece. ;)

My main concern would be like I said, knowing just how effective it would be if you had to depend on it.

If you do a search on the "Practical Tactical" forum, you'll find no love for the 'stun gun". These are contact-only, pain-compliance weapons. When the thing is in contact with the other party, it hurts. When it's not, it doesn't. Not like television, my friend... The individual does not fall down, loose consciousness, or become incapacitated. If drunk or drug-fueled, he may not do anything at all other than become enraged.
Not recommended.

"Cheap" shouldn't be combined with SD. I personally would never carry or deploy anything that I didn't train enough to develop muscle-memory conditioned response.

In your example, cheap stun guns are notorious for faulty batteries which do not hold a sufficient charge, especially after a few charge cycles. Definitely test it and continue to do so regularly ( and I don't mean to just "spark" it).

You should also ask yourself why the person was willing to trade this for a Byrd.
