Thought I'd pass this along...I was looking for a cheap workbench and ran across one at Lowes. It seemed like a pretty good deal. For $88 you get a 4' work surface with 2 drawers, light, power strip, pegboard, and lower shelf. Check it out if you're in the market. I picked up a couple and put one together last night. It's well made and sturdy. The item number is 211126 and can be seen on their website (www.lowes.com). Follow the links for "tools" and then "other tool items" then "workbenches". I'd be hard pressed to build one for the same $ and only spent a couple hours putting it together.

I'm using an old dresser (a BIG dresser, 8 drawers and one cabinet). Out in the barn we've got an old door with pipe legs and a shelf built underneath. Yours sounds cool but mine is cheaper :p

I finally took a break from making knives this week to build a workbench. I spent 36 bucks on the 2x4s and built the frame Tuesday night. Its a big bench 4x4x8. I'm pretty tall but its still a little too tall. I wanted a big work space and plenty of room for storage under it. I thought I was bordering on greatness until I purchased the plywood. 5 sheets of 5/8" =$141.00 plus screws hinges and a pad lock = $188.00 total ouch. My idea was to make a lockable box/workbench to make it harder to break into. I'm rethinking my whole plan now that I see the ones lowes has. Oh well, too late now. I have never not been able to pay off my monthly credit card bill until I started making knives.

A solid core door makes a great benchtop. I got mine for under $50 and it measures 80"x30"x1.75". It's particle board surfaced with masonite. Layer two if that's not solid enough for you, but an overly thick benchtop makes it tough to drill holes through to bolt stuff down.
