Cheaper knife choice

Hello

After seeing those horrors stories about people abusing knives, I decided to buy a cheap beater for when people ask "Can I borrow your knife" and other tasks I'll don't want to get my custom EDC on.

I hesitate between a Byrd Meadowlark with G-10 handles or a CRKT Dogfish.
The Byrd appears more sheeple-friendly and the G-10 handles looks good, but the Dogfish with bottle opener would make a hell of a party knife. By the way, how is the G-10 on the Byrds?

Wich would you pick and why?

try a victorinox soldier, its small, has an awl, screwdriver, bottle/can opener, wire stripper and blade
can do all the things that might brake your knife tip...

victorinox soldier or tinker. i started carrying those for this purpose and now i don't even carry anything else anymore.

SAK all the way. Uber sheeple friendly, and handy witth several tools, including a bottle opener. Be careful. I started carrying a SAK to protect "my" knife fro abuse by others, and now I only carry the SAK.

Byrd or SAK is good. Ka-Bar Dozier Hunter is good. But the Dogfish might be even better,
if you have ever read the amazing problems some people have closing a folding knife! :p

Always fun to see someone discovering a linerlock for the first time.

Thanks guys, but I'm not looking for a SAK. And to be even more precise, it's to complete an order from A.G. Russel's. I get a Titanium Lockback Folder, but I don't want to pay International shipping for 25$, so I'll get a second cheaper knife.

And I try to avoid FRN/zytel handles.

SAK would ge a great choice. I carry one of those folders that use razor blades to let others use.

Nice thing about any of these that have been mentioned is that they are still very good knives, even if they are inexpensive.
Byrds
KaBar Doziers
SAKs

all good boogey. You will still look like a "knife guy" when you hand them one.

another Meadowlark vote... the Firebyrd's got a bottle opener and holds a standard bic size lighter ;)
but that Dogfish does have a cool bottle opener
the byrd steel will have much better edge retention though

BYRD! BYRD! BYRD! ive had my crossbill for a day and am already impressed with it and my dads going to get the drop point verson of that next gun show, wonderful lock up and its SHARP!!! being that its "from" spyderco im not surprised, its just as sharp as the Manix that i picked up at the same time, i sell alot of Byrd's where i work (Sportsmans Warehouse Round Rock, Tx) they are cheap and very well built, i at first hesitated at getting one when we first received them, we only carry the Cara Cara G10 plain and the serrated and the Raven plain and serrated so i had to go the gun show the other day and pick one up. get the byrd i love CRKT's but i like the byrds from experience.

I have a G10 Cara Cara and I have been very impressed with its fit & finish. Very sharp out of the box. I think the Byrd line is currently one of the best bang for your buck deals out there.

I carry a superknife for exactly that purpose.
-dont have to sharpen it
-they can break the tip if they want to
-doesnt cost more than 8 bucks to replace a 'lost' one.
-and its my own beaterknife as well.
-absolute sheeple friendly as we..

I've got a couple of G-10 Byrds -- a Robin and a Cara Cara -- and they're very well made for the price. Spyderco has done a great job at ensuring QC on these knives. The G-10 on the Byrds is nice and grippy.

I've never held a Dogfish.

I see you're not going to go with a SAK, but I have to say my current favorite backup knife is a SAK Victorinox Cadet. It's Alox, so it has a feel and look of quality some find lacking in the plastic-handled models. It's very thin and pocketable. It also has a bottle opener, as well as a can opener, slotted screwdriver, phillips screwdriver and a nail file. Very handy. If not now, think about picking one up at some point.
